Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is everyone so fascinated with old games?

HUH?  Are you serious?  Give examples.  I would say that a game that gets published today, on the average, is better than the average title 10-15 years ago.  They have YEARS of experience to build upon.  Even the most cookie-cutter and formulaistic game out there NOW is better than some garage game experiment years ago.

Because I have yet to experience an era better than the 16-bit one.

2d had often better control schemes than the 3d ones.
also the camera isn't an issue with 2d games.

easier controls but harder games are the result. much more rewarding.

nostalgia...that's the only reason, it takes us back to our youth, and youth one loved but can not go back to, playing the old game just brings back those happy memories and that's it.

I for example can not play FF7 or Zelda OoT, they look and plays like shit. I do not have any emotional attachment to those game's since I never played them in my youth so to me these games are just crap and now matter how good the quality the games were back in the day they don't stand the test of time, but their are people who loved them back in the day, and have fond memories, so for them they can go back and play them despite their flaws...nostalgia is very powerful, and publishers know how to milk it, which is why we see certain old games do well.

The one game I loved back on the day was Revolution X for the sega mega drive, basically a light gun type based on aerosmith game but me and my bro used the standard controller for it, and back them it was awesome, but if you go back know....it's a piece of shit, but you know, because I have fond memories of it, I overlook the fact it's a piece of shit and some what enjoy it as I did back in the day... so to say "some old games prove to be of better quality that some games today" is simply ludicrous.

OP: Because older games have sould, depth and are generally just a lot more playable than those of today.
To me, it seems almost as if the older developers loved what they were doing more than today's.

It does seem to be nostalgia, for the most part.

Some games (like Syphon Filter) really do not age well. This applies to many PS1 titles, actually. What was amazing back in the mid to late 90s is just poor and inexcusable nowadays.

I find that SNES games have aged well, because that was the perfection of 2D gaming, as such. However, the PS1 broke into new territory, a "third dimension" without the faintest idea of how to control or work that third dimension. Games looked ugly. Camera was uncontrollable and often a harder enemy than any actual enemies in the game.

I'll take modern technology and HD graphics, less bugs and online over heart and soul and originality any day, thanks.

The big push is graphics these days but it seems that many devs forgot how to properly design and balance gameplay. Something which 'older' devs and games of old seemed to master since the graphics took a back seat.

Just my opinion but old school games/mods were gameplay > graphics but now a days its graphics > everything. There are still some gems out there but for the most part the focus is in the wrong spot in my opinion ;)

I think its because every generation will always have those games that are so classic they can never be forgotten. I think everyone can agree with me that no one could ever forget the first game Mario ever appeared in and that was Donkey Kong.
