Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is there a reason why they chose not to have online play in Punchout!!?

I think maybe because of the networking limitations on the wii could have made or broke the overall experience. After playing a little of SSbb I could see the netcode being a problem with player interaction (i.e. lag). Also this game to me is more of a single player game (because of the nature of the earlier incarnations from snes days) and I would think that they would not want to ruin that experience for those who picked up the game for nostalgia only. I think it was a good idea to keep it local multiplayer and that way you and a couple of buddies can knock the snot out of each other in the comfort of your own living room

I am not sure how my single player and/or local co-op experience could have been hindered by a possibly laggy online co-op.

Anyways, I still would have rathered them try and fail then to not try at all.

Game is currently at 89 on Metacritic by the way with 13 reviews. The only reason it was knocked below 90 was from the stupid Onion. Losers gave Punchout!! a 75. -.-

This one may be on Metacritic.  The Onion AV Club gave the game a "B."  Metacritic translated it to a 75.

Other than that, the lowest scores have been 85s from GameTrailers and NintendoPower (for anyone who thinks NP is a shill -- look at that).

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Because Punch Out!! is a single player game. And there's not much point in adding online to the extra multiplayer mini-game.

The Wii is a party system. It is a system you invite friends over and play. It has some single player also. I know Nintendo has done a few things featuring online play. However, it isn't a lot.

Because it only makes sense as a single player game or local multiplayer game.

It's not the kind of game you play online with random people.

I don't get that at all, to me it makes no sense.

So the game is meant for my friends to come over and play with me on my Wii but not meant for me and my friends to play together from our own homes with our own Wii's?

Sorry but that just sounds dumb.

Either way this instance is no huge deal for me but I would have appreciated it and oddly, I feel as though I should expect it at this point since it is not only 2009 but the Wii is also the market leader.

Isn't The Onion a comedy satire website, why the hell is that included in MetaCritic?

I have seen Metacritic use their scores for many many titles. I had the same initial reaction as you though when I first saw it.

Scores go 100,91,90,90,90,90,90,90,90,90,85,85 and then comes a 75.

Metacritic is known for being extremely lazy when it comes to letter grades.

I think it goes something like:

A+ = 100

A = 100

A- = 91

B+ = 83

B = 75

B- = 67

I forget C+ and below but I am sure these are spot on.

...

I know for you new gamers it might sound strange but in the NES -  Playstation era we used to have to play at our friends houses and vice versa to play multiplayer games. Also, it was just called multiplayer back then. Also, we didn't say racist or sexist remarks to each other. That was a neccessary part to keeping friends back then.
