Forums - Sony Discussion - PSP Beats DS In Japanese Weekly Hardware Sales

Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending September 16th, following details of the software top thirty.

In a turnaround of fortunes that would have seemed impossible even a month ago, the PSP has outsold the Nintendo DS for the first time in over a year. The launch of the PSP Slim and Lite and the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has seen a massive increase in sales of over 79,923 units to a total of 95,487. How many of these units are the new PSP Slim and Lite and how many the original version of the hardware is unclear.

Previously even this large increase in sales would not have seen the PSP totally outsell the Nintendo DS, but the Nintendo portable continues to endure unusually low sales. Despite a small increase of 2,501 units it could still manage a total of only 79,989, with no reports of significant stock problems.

 Interesting news for the PSP.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

On their own the release of Final Fantasy and the PSP Lite should have boosted sales dramatically, together it is not that surprising that the system outsold the DS this week.

I suspect that a couple of weeks from now the DS will be outselling the PSP by a wide margin again but that the PSP's sales are much higher than they were before.

DS sales is going to take over psp sales next week enjoy this week.

It's a nice win for Sony, something I don't think GameCube was ever able to do, but then again, Sony never controlled two fronts at once.

well i think you have to take your hat of to the PSP. No other handheld console has ever been able to hold their own against a Nintendo handheld console. I think it will be close next week and in two weeks I expect the DS to be back on top. The PSP sales should stabalize higher than before though.

PSP also is above Wii for the WW weekly sales for the first time this year.

Don't be so sure about that; the official PSP lite launch is this week. It may happen yet again for another week.

Then, DS needs to work very hard to achieve that goal.  PSP slim sold more than 130,000 units on the launch day.

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

I figure their best week for the new PSP will be whenever the Crisis Core LE comes out as that is an extra 77777 sales pretty much, assuming it sells out which seems a good bet.
