Forums - PC Discussion - What uses up more power? A Laptop/Notebook or a Desktop PC?

Im just wondering.. jst something id like to know.

Lets just say that they are both on for 1 hour..

the Desktop PC has a 22inch screen, and speakers..

and the notebook is on the charger..

which one uses up more power?

Estimated guesses of the power usage for both would also be good...

Thanks.

Around the Network

Desktop easily, Laptop is designed to operate from the battery alone and, even if it is plugged in, it is still optimised to run more efficiently than a PC always.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Laptop err, 30-40W?

Computer err 100-150W?

Tease.

Generally a desktop, especially with a larger screen and speakers.

Laptops will generally vary between the low 20Ws up to around 50W, though some beefy systems like the Dell 17" XPS range (high end gaming laptops) can consume up to 150W. These high end machines only run at full speed when plugged in however and scale back dramatically on the battery.

On the desktop side, a standard machine will generally consume around 100-150W. However, with the ability to customise the power usage can jump dramatically. If you have a graphic card like mine, which consumes 190W by itself when under load, your overall power usage is going to be much higher. Add in multiple hard discs, dual graphics cards and all the accessories, and you can see why they make 1000W power supplies for them.

To make matters worse for myself, I also use my desktop on my plasma tv, which draws 565W...

ahhk, thanks for the info.. thats heaps good to know about laptops using a low amount of power because i am buying myself one shortly
