Forums - General Discussion - Why is Obama speeking at Notre Dame University's graduation?

Obama isn't very left at all compared to the rest of the world.

I don't recall there being any fuss when they invited Bush to speak there. The Catholic church is as opposed to the death penalty as they are opposed to abortion. Bush has the record for the number of executions as the governor of Texas, at a time when it turned out that around 40% (on average, probably higher in Texas) of the people on death row across the country were INNOCENT. Where was the outrage then?

Because he's a President.

Seriously President = biggest commencement speaker you can get even if you don't agree with him.

Also a fair amout of catholics voted for Obama.  Young Catholics likely being the larger subset of that.

Besides despite his abortion stance Obama is one of the most religious presidents we've ever had.

there was but not as big as this because abortions take place more in the U.S. than the death penalty. also Obama opened government funded embryonic stem cell reasearch.

There was not a similar outrage because capital punishment is not as equally immoral as abortion to the Roman Church. Pope Benedict stated as much in a letter sent to Bishops a few years ago. This can also be affirmed by the encyclical Evangelium Viate and the new Catechism which was proclaimed legitimate by Pope John Paul II by an Apostolic Constitution.

Notre Dame invited President Obama to deliver the commencement because of his exemplary service as a community activist who worked to alleviate the plight of the poor and because of his efforts to heal racial divisions. Whether or not this is acceptable is an issue that Catholics must decide.
