Forums - Sales Discussion - Who is buying all the PS2s?

When looking at the recent sales figures, it's hard not to notice how well the PS2 is selling. While one part of that, the price, is obvious, I'm honestly still confused when I see the high sales, as I really don't know *who* is buying them all.

I'm sure one element is people who already own a PS2, buying a slim one to replace a fat one, or a second one, or replacing a broken one. Another are PS3 owners of a non-BC console (I fall into this, as a recently diversified ex-Nintendo fanboy, I recently picked up a PS2 to play the games I missed while enjoying my Gamecube). Perhaps 360 owners who want access to a gigantic library of great games for cheap.

But still, I don't see all those adding up to the sales that it's getting. Basically, I'm wondering, how many people are actually buying a PS2 as their main console, at this point. I know there is a degree, as I've personally witnessed someone buy a PS2 + Guitar Hero IV, and my little brother probably devastated some kid at school who got a PS2 last Christmas (he responded that he got a PS3, a PSP and about a dozen games. I spoil the kid. :D ).

Anyway, if anyone has any info on this, idle speculation or random anecdotes, I'd be interested, as I'm genuinely curious how many people are buying a new PS2 as their main console at this point in its life.

4 ≈ One

PS2 is a great alternative for those who are looking for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th DVD player for their bedroom or childs room. Also if you are still into playing the PS2 perhaps yours is like mine and it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't (disc read errors) and you are not quite ready for the next generation.

Honestly... Poor families with kids around 10 or younger. (Or cheap ass parents.)

I saw it even with gamecube too... the games are cheaper, the systems cheaper.... so the kids get a videogame system because they couldn't afford one previously.  I've seen people use the DS in this regard too.

Heh. All kids should have a big brother 10 years older than them and with an excess of disposible income. My little brothers are so damn spoiled. I've bought them all three consoles (plus both portables) and about 70 games between the three current-gen systems. :)

Back in my day, all I had was a Sega Genesis and like, 5 games. Sonic 2 and Mutant League Football are my childhood. Hehe.

my older brother has a family now, and he hasn't got a lot to spend on himself, he has only just bought a ps2 now its cheaper and easier for him ,people who got rid of theirs and regret it and now can get one for next to nothing, lots of reasons lol

Yeah you answered the qestion. I got one recently to play rpgs Imissed as a Gamecube dude.

it still provides entertainment to tons of people who cant effort an xbox360 (maybe not for the price since its not that much more expensive, but more for the games, 60 dollar/euro games is a lot, especcially when you have to work double shifts to make it through the month and still want to provide some fun for your kids)

loll imma write a thread answering my own question hehe jk but yea what you said are good reasons why PS2 is still selling.
