Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN: Is Metal Gear Solid Overrated?

Anyhow, I personally disagree with the OP on this matter. MGS4 was in no way over-rated. I honestly don't know how the hell the story was told badly! I understood and very much enjoyed it. People seriously need to understand that the MGS series is VERY story-driven. Thus, the story will have an immense impact on your experience. Like I said before, I loved the story, no matter how far-fetched some of the scenes were. So, I'll answer again: MGS4 was not over-rated. By the way, this is my opinion. Don't confuse it with fact.

It's MGS1 not MGS4. You should read more and I don't agree with it either.

Click the link and read the article it's very interesting.

Although MGS is still fun. In certain ways. Boss fights are always "teh epicness"

Certainly MGS is fun. But it was the first game to prove that a game doesn't necessarily have to be such, it can rely on the strength of it's narrative, it's message to sell well as well. Braid took this and ran with it, and The Path which many reviewers have been calling non-fun yet slapping good scores upon it is really capitalizing upon that idea now.

Fun is a very important factor.

No offense and I know what you're trying to say. But In order for you to appreciate games, movies or etc. you should have fun first. In order for you to get deep into a game, To understand the story more, unlock what everything in the game you should have fun first. Because you won't do it if you are not having fun. You will just get bored. If the game is boring for you. No matter how great it is, you won't appreciate it. Game should be fun and enjoyable first.

Fun is the most important element on a game.

That's why we are playing video games in order for us to have fun.

EDIT: Sorry for the poor english, if there's a wrong grammar. Correct me please I would appreciate it.

While you make a point, I disagree to an extent. I play games for meaning, for mind expanding experiences not just to have fun. That said having fun creates an even better experience, but it isn't the focal point of my gaming habits.

MGS4 is, and to a slightly lesser extent MGS2 also.

Never come across so much inconsistant badly told story in my life as in those two games.

I wholeheartly agree. MGS4 is one of the biggest disappointments this gen.

I am going to chime in here. Take my view as someone who never really got into the series at all, but has owned every game in the Solid series, outside of PSP stuff. I got into it, because of the buzz about it.  MGS4 is the only Metal Gear game I ever played through completely.  Oh, I also own the first MGS Ac!d game, on the PSP, by the way.

I am of the belief that this is NOT the "best eva" unless you get sucked into the Metal Gear universe. The game has flaws and cracks with it, that get exposed when you factor in what Kojima was trying to do. The end result is the flaws stand out as far as it being a videogame goes. The cutscenes in MGS4 are WAY TOO LONG. It ups the attempt to tell a story, but cuts down the gameplay, which is what videogames are about. And the game play is a bit pokey in nature. As a shooter, it works, but other shooters do better.

And then, let's look at the story. Unless you are a deep down fanatic, who had followed every nuance of the game world, and played every game in the series, the story is confusing, muddled, and all over the map. It kinda comes together, but does so through some really weird events, like the personality of someone transferring over to someone else via the grafting of an arm onto them? Seriously fans of the series, WTF? Why would anyone not caught up in Kojima's "awesomeness" find that a realistic plot point?

Can I go on here about the entire "War economy" bit? Kojima believes that we can have a world that is completely funded by war? Seriously? Who here believes that? Exactly where does the money and production come from? You blow stuff up and do mayhem. Historically, wars were fought to gain large amounts of resources. Maybe the rest of the MGS story explains how in Kojima's world, that is possible to have, without having resources to fight over.

So, I will close here by saying that MGS ends up trying to bring the pacing and storytelling of a movie into videogames, so it feels AWESOME and high production, but then gets handicapped by videogame conventions and absurdities we are used to in videogames that we accept. The end result is a videogame that has cut scenes that run WAY too long, and something akin to an interactive movie with the absurdities of videogames in their plot points.

So, for my take it feels like a hollow movie like experience, but still AWESOME in production value. As far as production value to get a movie experience, one is hard pressed to find something greater. But, I believe there is other videogames that deliver better on the full storytelling experience that FEELS like it could be a movie. I count Uncharted as one.

Anyhow, I also believe the game gets overhyped due to the fact you have Metal Gear fanatics who are followers of it with cult-like devotion, and the fact that MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive, it gets held up as ammo in a fanboy war, so saying it is "The best game EVA!" is a way to score points to get people to buy a PS3 over a 360. If MGS4 comes to the 360, this will get muted.

Ok, so to wrap up, MGS4 is a very good to great (depending on your thoughts of the MGS series) that belongs on a PS3 owner's list of games to consider buying. But it isn't the "Best game ever!" and other people have explained why it isn't.

Oh, I'm sorry. Even so, my comment is directed to those who think that MGS4 was over-rated. As a whole, I absolutely love the MGS series. Just check out my sig.

Guidelines to understanding my train of thought:

  • THE METAL GEAR SOLID FRANCHISE IS THE BEST THING TO HIT THE PLANET SINCE THE PS3!! THUS, MGS FRANCHISE >> SLICED-BREAD.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always shove 1up mushrooms up Mario's ass.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always decimate Master Chief with a flurry of rocket launchers, shotgun rounds, and a 20 minute monologue.

Actually, Liquid doesn't live through Ocelot's arm. That's what we are led to believe in MGS2, but MGS4 explains the situation in a logical manner.

If it did, I don't remember it at all.  The channeling of a spirit through his arm or something, was what I remember.  Something about a soul transfer done through the arm, transferring of a personality.  Maybe I am off.  It struck me as a videogame plot device when I saw it in MGS4.  Feel free to post a spoiler below or post a URL to the link.

Guess Japanese made games are too complicated for 360 fanboys to understand.

From what I remember, Ocelot got rid of liquids arm after the events of MGS2 and opted for a cybernetic transplant. Much like how Raiden got his ninja body. The reason why Ocelot too on the persona of Liquid was not because of the arm but through the use of psychiatric drugs that made him the way he was in MGS4. This was clearly evident at the end of the game, where old snake defeated Ocelot atop of that huge ship.

Guess Japanese made games render weeaboos unable to discern the difference between complicated and contrived.
