Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Article: Why Nintendo is always ‘doomed’

http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/why-nintendo-is-always-doomed/

Some excerpts:

The mistake is that many writers, once they believe they have grasped the trends concerning the game industry, then turn around and apply those trends to Nintendo. Nintendo, we can all agree, does what is best for Nintendo. The game industry, to these writers, is not customers but some mystical abstraction of infinite developers, publishers, ad infinitum that float, like angels, on a cloud that separates them from the earthly bonds of the market. In their minds, it makes perfect sense that a developer’s opinion is seen as an oracle expressing the future of ‘The Industry’. What the customers say and do, well, what do they matter? According to these writers, customers are not members of the industry. And when reality occurs, that customers do control what publishers and developers make, seething anger erupts among the keyboard jockeys. “Nintendo is destroying gaming!” where, by every indication, it is the opposite.

...

Sony and Microsoft rely on third parties to create an install base with their consoles because both companies lack the first party studio strength to perform it themselves. In other words, relying on third party software to drive install base is considered ‘normal’ and ‘the future’. Nintendo, like Sega and Atari and Hudson, rely on first party software to drive the install base. Therefore, it is ‘concerning’, ‘problematic’ and eventually ‘doomed’.

...

If Nintendo titles top the sales charts, it is ‘concerning’, ‘problematic’, and Nintendo is ‘doomed’ because ‘only Nintendo titles sell on Nintendo.” If a third party game, on Nintendo’s platform, tops the charts, why that third party company is so amazing, so talented, so wonderful! If that third party game does not sell, it isn’t because it is a bad game, that the company has no talent, or anything like that. Why, it is Nintendo’s fault. Somehow.

Curiously, when a third party game on a Microsoft or Sony platform, like a Grand Theft Auto, tops the sales lists, it is because of the genius and incredible talent of Microsoft and Sony, not the third party itself. When a third party game does poorly on Microsoft or Sony platform, it is because of that third party.

that's Bull shit, Sony has a very strong 1st party studio, which produce quality games, but at the end of the day console manufactures have to have a good balance of both 1st and 3rd party, either extreme is problematic more so if the console heavily relies on 1st party, after all 3rd party is very important since their are more studios, which means more games, which means a library of great games.

In my opinion the wii is doomed because its hook was the motion controls which has attracted the casual market, but this very market is flaky and looks for the new trendy gadget, and apple is the king at this, once the casual market have their eyes set on the next trendy thing, they stop buy what is considered old, in this case it'll be the wii, and simply move on, this has always been the risk, and this is the reason Nintendo is milking it for all its worth, the motion plus is solely targeted at the hardcore, cuz once the casuals move on it'll be the hardcore keeping them afloat.

I hate the " Nintendo is is casualizing the market" crap. ppl dont realize the market has been casualizing for years now.

Sony and even ms first party efforts are much better than nintendos for the last year or two. They may not produce the same sales as nintendos products but quality is there...

Other than that the article is right...

Sony First Party games usually don't sell that well vs profit, the only thing that comes to my mind is the GT series that has actually sold well but it can't even beat Mario Kart Wii, if the Wii was going to be doomed, it would have already been doomed, PS3 is looking very bad right now no matter how you want to look at it. WM+ targeted to hardcore? yeah Tiger Woods PGA10 is super duper hardcore alright..... come on now, use your head more when replying to people.

Besides Gears of wars, Halo, Fable on the xbox360 and Killzone and........on the PS3 what else do they offer?

Nintendo on the other hand released Zelda, Mario, smash bros, fire emblem, metroid, new super mario bros and the mega succesful Mario kart wii and wii fit.

You can't deny that Nintendo is and always be the company with their strongest 1st party.

Yay Malstrom is writing again! Saleswise nintendo kicks the ass of sonys first party.

well bob, Nintendo has a big edge when it comes to first party because their characters are very well known throughout the world whereas MS and Sony have jack shit nothing basically, there is Halo, there is GT, that's all they have, they have shown efforts for other first party titles, pretty nice and quality efforts as a matter of fact, but the masses don't know what they are, hence they don't sell nearly as well. then again, Nintendo still does have the best first party devs to date still, they are very hard to beat, a little too hard.
