I don't think Tim is seen as great by other posters, Tim is just Squill's latest love affair.

I would love to know the breakdown on the Xbox 360 sales by pricepoint.

(I would say the same for the Sony but the 40G unit seems to be ubiquitous).

Mike from Morgantown

Average sale price is $290 according to pachter, so pretty firm majority Premiums followed by Arcades and those are trailed by Elite units.

Given that both Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda have sold over 2.5M copies and are the current Arcade pack-ins, it seems that a lot of them may have moved off store shelves -- at least at some point.

The SKU balance is different during the year than in the holidays. You have a larger proportion of people who are price/value concious during the holidays so for those 10 weeks the SKU balance shifts quite substantially away from the Premium and Towards the Arcade. Note the relative % difference between the Xbox 360/PS3 during the holidays and the Xbox 360 and PS3 now during the year. During the year its $299 vs $399, at the end of the year its more $199 vs $399. Does that make sense to you as a brief explanation?

This makes perfect sense and paints an even better picture for the 360 vs the PS3.  The 360 is beating the PS3 every (with minor exceptions) week this year. Even with price changes later this year the 360 lead will increase in November and December with gift givers.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Yep! Also Others sales are usually 10% higher than Americas sales throughout the year and during the holidays Americas sales are usually 10% higher than Others sales, which further swings the advantage towards the Xbox 360.

Tease.

im not worried about the recent sale trends for the wii, it seems to be mainly suffering in japan. there are plenty of methods nintendo can introduce to rectify this problem. and with the landslide of games releasing, it'll proly end the year with its most sold.

ps3 is doing poorly, but that will definitely change when GT 5 comes out. They're selling quite well relative the price point to, as stated by many others.

Time to bring out old faithful... Tada!

As you can see, PS3 needs a late 2009 similar to 360's late 2008 to stay ahead of the 360 sales curve, but a well timed price cut and some wicked software will deliver the goods.

This year will be the true test year for whether PS3 can maintain sufficient momentum to have a successful 3rd generation in the console gaming market and come out with a gentlemanly draw with the 360 (a gentlemanly draw being the PS3 at or above the 360 LTD sales curve by the time the nextbox comes out).

As it stands PS3 is only unsuccessful in comparison to it's own 2 previous generations. In the context of this generation and a number of other companies' previous generations the PS3 is doing just fine, and there is no reason to believe Sony can't see this gen through to a perfectly acceptable conclusion.

PS3 FSTP!

good 2009 for the 360 so far then, but we knew that already

Xbox and WII are doing very well! PS3 just looks like it is losing momentum and I hope for Sony's sake that changes.
