Forums - Gaming Discussion - March, critical point in 7th generation

Forget March for the PS3 - April is the month that matters. The PS3 launches so late in March (esp. here in Australia) it may not even make the March sales figures. April matters. Once the initial PS3 launch hoohaa dies down, its the recurring sales that really set the tone of things to come.

I personally don't think march or anything in the first 1/2 of 07 means diddely squat... look at sales trends, look at historical information... all consoles, all software, all big games... they all get better sales when they are released at key times during the year. Why would most companies want to release a game in March when it will likely sell only 1/2 or even 1/4 of the games potential if it was released in the christmas buying period... it's insane how much difference timing makes... March means shit... it's a slow time of year and it will remain a slow time of year. April is better with Easter holiday sales spikes... and mid year is also quite good... but the market really goes psycho from september - december every year so why would companies waste a big title earlier in the year? It applies for all platforms and all games... maybe 1 honestly big release a month for these times is what I can see. Yes you can go on and talk about all these other 'ok' games etc but the system sellers and big games aren't going to come until the second half of the year, and if it's in q3 it's likely to be close to the end of q3. Motorstorm is a big PS3 title??? No F'n way... Super Paper Mario is a big Wii title?? Gain NO F'n way! Crackdown is a big 360 title? Again... well i'd sound like a broken record if I said it again.

March is gonna bring forth the trend till holiday 2007. So if sony fails here in march, it's basically guarentee'd their gonna have trouble till at least holiday. If nintendo starts dropping sales here... well... that's gonna be bad for them period. If microsoft sales start going down-hill towards PS3/Wii... That's bad too. Basically March is gonna be a look into the next 6 months. EDIT: March is the base sales. July will be the 2nd massive push of games for PS3. If March sales arent amazing... april-june wont be any better... At least untill july. ;)

I fly this flag in victory!

Why do you say that though? What have you got to back it up?? Typically Feb and March are the slowest points in the year for the consoles, so it's natural for ALL of them to drop... I think 360 and PS3 will be under 200,000 for Feb and Wii will be just under 300,000... but that's yet to be seen. I don't see any 'killer app' 'system sellers' for any of the consoles in this time. As good as games like VF5, Motorstorm, Crackdown can be, I just don't think we'll see hardware move because of them... and games coming in march just drives this home further... people aren't in a big spending point of the year in Feb and March so I don't think big system seller titles are likely... You can't honestly say that any games coming for any system are system sellers? The only REAL game that I can see to sell systems is Tiger Woods for Wii... that has the posibility to be F'n HUGE IMO but that's the only one.

Kwaad: Few people will risk having several preorders in France, as you have to pay 20% of the price upfront for having a preorder secured. Which means nobody will make 8 preorders except scalpers. You can get your money back when you want, as long as the console is not there yet.

Kwaad, that sure is a lot of baseless speculation. Do you have any evidence, besides more speculation, to back that up?

I don't know how much the Wii is in France but at $250USD that would mean 8 pre-orders at 20% down is $400 down. I can only see scalpers doing that.

In Holland, u can pre-order for free so that doesn't go for all European countries. Btw: I pre-ordered 3 wii's... :P

I really don't see how March is that significant. Holiday season this year will be the true test. Can the Wii survive the onslaught of Halo 3 and GTA IV. In my opinion not only will it survive but it will end on top. It's too gift friendly of a system. What will the gap be between 360 and PS3 sales. There's almost no doubt to me that the 360 will still be selling better but Sony needs to keep it fairly close. I actually don't believe the 360 will ever blow away the PS3 in monthly sales, and if the PS3 can sell within 20% this holidays they'll be fine. The best days for the PS3 won't be for a few years, but they can't let the 360 run away with it.

I could be wrong, but I anticipate that at Christmas the Wii will be $200 (possibly with an aditional game bundled), the 360 will have a viable system at $300 and the PS3 will be $400; this will result in the Wii being a highly affordable "family" gift in most households, the XBox 360 will sell pretty well to houses which have gamers in it, and the PS3 will do alright in houses with gamers and High Definition set-ups. The Wii will come in first, XBox 360 second and the PS3 will come in third; the important question is how large of a margine will there be? Depending on game releases I could see either a really narrow margin (if the Wii has major games delayed and the XBox 360/PS3 get all of their games) or a very wide margin (if the Wii gets all of its games released and the XBox 360/PS3 have major games delayed).
