Forums - Sony Discussion - Why did ICO and Shadow of the Colossus have such low sales?

It's a damn shame both those games didn't sell like Gears of MGS. Only explanation I can think of is peeps are just plain ignant!

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Guidelines to understanding my train of thought:

  • THE METAL GEAR SOLID FRANCHISE IS THE BEST THING TO HIT THE PLANET SINCE THE PS3!! THUS, MGS FRANCHISE >> SLICED-BREAD.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always shove 1up mushrooms up Mario's ass.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always decimate Master Chief with a flurry of rocket launchers, shotgun rounds, and a 20 minute monologue.

I though about it and my conclusion is :

People are stupid

Dont generalize !

until maybe 18 months ago ive never heard of the two games, so i blame bad advertisement, and the fans for not hyping it enough. I mean come on !! I never heard of them when they were released, and i still havnt played either!

18 months ago.........so why havn't u played them yet

1) My PS3 isnt BC

2) My PS2 is set in the basement attached to DDR, and my girlfrend would kill me if i ever used it for anything else

3) I have work and school , and its to hard for me to find the time to play games anymore . I mean shii im at work right now!! ............coming to think of it im always at work when im online.

1) Just to make sure u bought them but u just don't have time to play them right

2) Believe me u will regret not playing this game

3) ur signature proves that u play alot

4) Get back to work( just kidding)

Well my biased opinion is they are bad games. The real reason could be while critics like them average gamers don't. Bad advertising possibly.

For the same reason No More Heroes and Madworld have low sales: they are niche titles. Only a small portion of gamers are interested in that style of game, so not many people buy them.

But like 95% of the people that play either of those games consider them to be the best of all time, you'd think word would spread, and people would at least give it a try, it should of had good legs.

I really hope Team ICO's new game for the PS3 get's advertised the sh*t out of it, everyone needs to know about this company.

Because they rock and people are dumb.

Serious answer:They appeal to a niche crowd and might not interest casual gamers.

You have to realize that 1.5 million (maybe a little less for SotC) is very well for any "non-extremely-popular" game, period.

Shadow of the Colossus had amazing sales for what it was.

For the same reason American Idol is the most watched show in the United States, the masses crave lowest common denominator tripe, they eat it up. The same goes for the videogame industry, anything that is artistic, beautiful, or god forbid, unique and different has an uphill battle ahead of it. Factor in a total lack of promotion on Sony's part and the cards are stacked even further against these titles. Furthermore, players these days demand action right at the get go, else the ADD kicks in, there is no time anymore for slow burners or games that delay their reward, give me redundant explosive action and give it to me now, and sustain it for 8-10 hours! If you want big sales numbers you dumb it down, make another derivative fps or a casual sports game. Fact of the matter is, that high sales numbers do not equate quality, if that were the case then logic would dictate that GM makes the best cars and Mc Donalds makes the best hamburgers, which of course is not true.

I agree.  For its accessibility in gameplay, it sold pretty well.  As a matter of fact these two games don't have low sales, unless someone's expectation is like 4 or 5 millions LTD.

I'll say it:

Both games are overrated.

They're like the movies that win Best Picture at the Oscars. Very few people actually know how to appreciate them.
