Forums - Sony Discussion - Square Enix merger didn't help the gaming industry

Right now I think what the OP was trying to get across was that a merger between the two biggest rivals snuffed out the competition and the need to make good games. I wonder what would the game industry look like today if Square had merged with another company instead. Konami-Soft? I think a merger was bound to happen but I think that if it was with a company other then Enix and a company that weren't known for their RPG's then we would be seeing a lot more quality games across what ever platforms coming from both Square and Enix despite where they ended up coming out on.

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

its really ironic how sony fanboys crib about the SE merger and the reported "purchase" of exclusivity by M$.. none of the fanboys complained when titles were exlusive to PSone/PS2

.... tsk tsk..wheel of life..

Actually the critisizing of S-E started in 2004 when Final Fantasy X-2 was released...

Not from me of course, I kinda liked Final Fantasy X-2, but i'm getting tired of Chocobo Tales, Crystal that, Monster joker and that kind of stuff.

Final Fantasy X-2 released in 2003 and was published by SquareSoft in Japan.

Sure, but i'm talking about when the first S-E critics started to appear on the internet.

Namco-Bandai has been doing pretty much the same as S-E when it come's to exclusive support, and they aren't critisized that much for there games, perhaps because games like Tales of Vesperia or Ace Combat 6 have a similar quality compared to there predecessors?

I'd say it's more because nobody cares about Tales outside of its hardcore fans. People love to hate on whatever is currently popular, there is little reason to bash something that doesnt sell well anyway.

Edit: And regardless, this is not because of Final Fantasy. FFXIII is the most anticipated game amongst the users of this website, and overall amongst japanese and North American PS3 owners.

What other huge hit Square had before the merger other than FF series?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

They were mainly known for Final Fantasy but many of their titles back then were quality. Titles such as Kingdom Hearts, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa series, Einhander, Mana series, Chrono games, Front Mission series and Parasite Eve series.

I am probably missing a few quality titles forgive me. All of these may not have been "Huge Hits" but they were quality unlike what we have been getting lately from S-E. In my opinion anyways.

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I hate the Saga team for making The Last Remnant

I wish we had an ignore feature.

SaGa Team = Greatest S-E team.

Greatest or whatever, once you produce crap like TLR, it's crap...

I never said I didn't like the saga series

Don't worry, I wasn't serious about the ignore feature or anything. That is why I used .

S-E still haven't made a game that I love, like yes but not nearly good enough games wich I could love.

FFXII: barely finished 1 time
Last Remnant: still haven't finished.
Infinitive Discovery: finished once.

The old Squaresoft games: nearly 6 times each.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Why would I worry?
