Forums - Sony Discussion - Square Enix merger didn't help the gaming industry

The Chrono Cross team has been making Final Fantasy XI add-ons and that MMO-RPG for the 360/PS3 for ages.
The Xenogears team did go and the Vagrant Story/ Final Fantasy Tactics team needed 5 years to complete Final Fantasy XII, almost a whole generation for one game.

Most of the talent is still there, but there games take to long in devolopement and they are wasting there talents on to much Spin-offs and Final Fantast XI add-ons.

its really ironic how sony fanboys crib about the SE merger and the reported "purchase" of exclusivity by M$.. none of the fanboys complained when titles were exlusive to PSone/PS2

.... tsk tsk..wheel of life..

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

owner of : atari 2600, commodore 64, NES,gameboy,atari lynx, genesis, saturn,neogeo,DC,PS2,GC,X360, Wii

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Ah, weekly Square-Enix bashing thread. And of course in the Sony section. And of course from the guy with an Old Snake avatar. And of course this has nothing to do with 360 exclusives.

Still, I'll answer: The goal of the merger was to decrease development costs and to create a strong single company out of the two failing ones. As both Square and Enix were in financial troubles in the period of 1999-2003. Square because of The Spirits Within, Enix because of DQVII and DQ Monsters 2 delays.

If not for the merger, Square would eventually go bankrupt again and become someone's 1st party studio and Enix would be forever stuck in Japan without any chance to become a global publisher. And now they are the biggest 3rd party japanese publisher, owners of Taito and Eidos, and are going to continue making take over bids despite the economic crisis. Because yes, they were that profitable during the last 5 years.

Yeah, they went downhill ever since they merged with Enix! SquareSoft were producing high quality games non-stop in their prime.
Hopefully, Final Fantasy XIII will proves us wrong.

I never played an Enix game, but weren't they making quality games as well? Your post makes it sound like it's Enix's fault.

They didn't make that many games, I found them to be more of a publisher. They published games like Star Ocean 2, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest, Terranigma, Illusions of Gaia, Actraiser. VP and SO2 beinmg developed by Tri-Ace.

I can't say it is Enix fault but things have been worse since the merger. It was like the competition just wasn't there like it used to.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Actually the critisizing of S-E started in 2004 when Final Fantasy X-2 was released...

Not from me of course, I kinda liked Final Fantasy X-2, but i'm getting tired of Chocobo Tales, Crystal that, Monster joker and that kind of stuff.

Well there's also the financial side of single platting Japanese oriented games on the console with the lowest selling Japanese console. PS3 fans use that in the argument. They then contradict themselves by later using the argument that "you can't play sales" when sales are used against them.

FOR ALL THE PPL BAMMING ENIX!!!!: Just to let you know when the merger happend ALL OF THE SQUARE GUYS BECAME TO THE NEW HEADS OF THE COMPANY!!!, the ENIX boss became chairman, what happend was SS didn't have lots of money so they forced to make quality games. now they have money to throw around and other new franchise to milk, so there doing what any other bigheaded company would, when small companies become big they loose..like SE did

Sure, but i'm talking about when the first S-E critics started to appear on the internet.

Namco-Bandai has been doing pretty much the same as S-E when it come's to exclusive support, and they aren't critisized that much for there games, perhaps because games like Tales of Vesperia or Ace Combat 6 have a similar quality compared to there predecessors?

alot of SE hate comes ppl who loved SS but the with merger they become fed up, Namco wasnt really big in the past, hell there bigger now then they used to be, all they had was SC4 and Tekken all there RPGs recently become mainstream
