"male-female ratio is nearly equal" scares me.

What's even funnier is that this whole statement was prefaced with the words:

"According to our internal research...."

You know Nielson also collects this exact data. Leaving Nielson out is the same thing as saying:
"although nielsen says one thing, we have these numbers you should look at"

Judging by the first words, it is apparent that this statement is spinful. Not that Sony's was any better.
Although Wii is played the least, individually, it doesn't mean it's in the closet. In fact, the sales numbers speak for themselves.

This data is Japan only.  Nielson does not collect data in Japan.

THIS DATA IS JAPAN ONLY?!?!

This is a whole new meaning of spin city. the implications are.... oh my

*faints*

It's only spin if he was addressing people outside of Japan. Being reported outside of Japan doesn't count.

I love how broad range demographic is being considered a strength by nintendo, but a liability by dev companies.

Nintendo is proving that some devs certainly need to have a paradigm shift. If they want money, they have to appeal to the mass sometimes. Safe games will come and go, but true profit train is hard to come by.

but are YOU as a gamer like to play those games?

Yes....as I said I most likely will be impressed with E3 and buy a Wii for my living room so my family can play it. My parents hate my 360 and PS3, but they actually agreed to become involved if I buy a Wii.

I love when Nintendo talks. Is like listening to an intelligent 40 year old woman being polite and kicking your butt at the same time XD While sony talks like a drunken sorority guy trying to impress his comrades and the airhead cheerleaders ;P

Exactly.  Nintendo handled this with such tact and professionalism.  Sony big-wigs really look pretty desperate by making such statements in the first place and they'll certainly feel like idiots after reading Iwata's "reply".

Wii in a living room = less used since it competes for TV viewing with the entire families ranges of shows they watch. Among other things.

Sony: People don't use their Wiis. They're not even connected to the living room T.V., while the PS3 is!

Nintendo: Well actually, the Wii is the console most likely to be connected to the T.V. at all times. Also, it has the highest number of active players per household.

KylieDog: Wiis that are connected to the living room T.V. get used the least because people also watch T.V.!

noname2200: lol. Among other things.

It is true, I have no idea why they are both making statements like this.

A console hooked up to the main TV in a family home will not get used as much as one hooked up to a different TV or in the house of someone single.

It is some PR e-peen thing but when it comes down to it it ends up a negative.

It all depends.

I know that I have all my consoles hooked up to the main TV in the Den. And it gets gamed on a lot -- hours of Wii playing per day.

Meanwhile, I know one family where the Wii is in the living room and the teen age son has the Xbox 360 in his bedroom.

However, these comments were made about the Japanese market, specifically in advance of the launch of a video service. So being hooked up to the living room TV is very important.

i love how classy they are, you know Microsoft or sony responding to a barb like that would have been ass

nintendo simple says, false while leaving out the culprit

thats class

Nintendo is so strong it can afford being classy, the strong (almost) never needs to raise his voice.

Anyhow, maybe Wii doesn't pwn the closet yet, but it single handedly pwns a lot of TV sets:

Well looking at this statement again, there are two conditionals that allow for it to be true.

addressing the second part about the reporting aspect, then who should I be finding fault with? DMeisterJ?
