Xbox 360 players are loners

Nintendo is continuing with its pre-release promotions for Wii no Ma. Joining earlier updates at the Nintendo official site, the Wii no Ma page at the wii.com site was given an update of its own in the form of a lengthy video speech from CEO Satoru Iwata.

I haven't listened to the whole speech yet, but here are some graphs Iwata posted:

This one shows household user counts separated by platforms. Wii leads the way with 3.4 users per household. Xbox 360 lags with just 1.5.

Next, a graph showing the Wii's userbase, charted by age (increasing from left to right), male (blue) and female (pink). The units are in 1,000, with the extrema reaching 400,000.

The point of the graph is that Nintendo has a pretty much 50-50 split at most age groups. Except for the very elderly, it seems, where only females play Wii.

According to the fine print, the data for these charts was assembled in January through interviews in Osaka and Tokyo reaching a sample of 3,045 people.

One other point given by Iwata in the first few minutes that I was able to listen is that 87% of Wii owners use the Wii on the biggest television in the house -- the one in the living room.

(Obviously, PS3 and 360 users keep use their system in their personal THX-certified HD theater spaces).

 

Sorry about the title of the thread (it was the title of the article) but the research indicates that there are less users on the 360 than on the Wii per household. What do you think of the research? Is it biased? Does it amount to anything relevant? Discuss more here.

So what happens when there's someone like me who has both systems?

Low system sales leads to bashing the opposition, welcome to the war Nintendo.

It amounts to Nintendo realising their dreams of what Wii would do to break down the barriers for gamers and non-gamers in a household.

It's very significant.

That's to be expected really.

360 owners generally are young males, play alone (online) and often are playing in their rooms or the basement so they are not hogging the tv from everyone else. Being a blu-ray player helps PS3 stay in the living room but it really only caters to the young (15-35) male demographic too.

Wii has games for all ages and sexes, thanks to Wii Fit and Wii Sports you need to have it in the living room and it has the type of (non) games that will get mom and sis playing too.

This study was done in Japan. The average 360 owner in Japan is more of an Otaku, from what I've heard. They are like the hardcorest of the hardcore.

I believe this is a failure for Nintendo....

Instead of Nintendo selling these consoles to every, single individual person, people are instead SHARING the console together, thus limiting their sales.

Now, if only MS realizes their potential, they can get more people to buy their console and since only one person plays per console, they can ramp up their revenue!

I wonder what it would look like in America? Who are the TV stats people again? Anyway research by that unnamed company showed that the Xbox 360 was the most used console of the three.

This is why Wii's attach ratio is so high. Each Wii gets used by several people in the house, and they have Wii parties for friends. So building a bigger game collection benefits a ton of people. Buying a $50 game for 4 people makes more sense than buying a $60 game for yourself.

Interesting to see how at a certain age, people get "too cool" for Nintendo, but then every year more of them come back, and then at a certain age, Nintendo's your only choice.

And all black people can dance. C'mon Nintendo! Don't stereotype!!!
