Forums - Sales Discussion - Will the wii eventually outsell the PS2?

Market is keeping on growing despite the crisis (after 3.5yrs for XB360 and 2.5 for Wii and PS3 we're already at 100million consoles sold this gen), so it will easily exceed PS1, but PS2 is not so difficult too, and even the 3rd in the race could easily exceed 50million and the 2nd 80million.

maybe the longer the gen goes it will be easier if gen goes onlly 3 more years it would be to hard as the wii would need 60%plus 4-5 years it would only need 50% plus this would need 200mil more sales.

as much as i like the wii i think no ,i don't see it selling for 10 years either

@phinch
price cuts will be the key as sales for all console may increase if prices come down but for the wii to get to thoses sales it will have to keep high % of sales.

Nah no way it reaches PS2 levels. And remember PS2 is undertracked on this site, its been put at as much as 140 million and this site has it at 124 million

Nope widespread adoption of HDTV will kill it before that happens.

I don't know about the rest of the world but HDTV prices in the US aren't exactly Sky high any more. you can get 42" 1080P for less than $1000 at brick and mortar stores. If you shop online you can get one for $700 to $800. 32"sets  can be had for around half that. HDTV adoption has nothing to do with Wii sales, especially considering the fact that most Wii owners own an HDTV already.

Iwata has publicly stated that it will. Iwata does not tend to boast or get cocky. He's also demonstrated a remarkable ability to read the market.

I'm betting with Iwata, because I like being right.

This.

Iwata has shown great skill and vision over the last few years. I'll go with his (And the Sources) view. It's probable, and I think it will happen.

Yes, Iwata has demonstrated a remarkable ability to read the market with the Wii and DS, but NOT with the GameCube. Maybe he's getting better at it :)

if this gen gets to 300mil and that could happen if it last long enough the wii need only make 50% of sales though it most likely could make 60% outside chance that will still leave second and third double last gen.

Well, the Gamecube was the last Nintendo system developed under Hiroshi Yamauchi. The DS and Wii are the first Nintendo game platforms developed under Iwata's watch.  Iwata was promoted to the head position at Nintendo after the Gamecube was completed and right before the Gamecube's launch.
