The pic is of Nagato Yuki, who's an alien The main character Haruhi, is melancholy because she views her life, along with the universe in general as boring, mundane, and meaningless (almost like nihilism, although a bit different) What she doesn't know is that she ha the extraordinary power to change the universe itself, and that the club she made out of boredom contains an alien, esper, and time traveler. Those 3 extraordinary members, along with the normal main character try to keep Haruhi from being bored with this world (and possibly remaking the world itself)

@ Akvod - Haruhi rocks, i have the anime on dvd, the light novels are hard to find here in the UK

You could just read it online. I don't have a hoarding complex like most otakus do, and I'm fine with not collecting anything, but just enjoying the material in the first place. Here's the site, just in case you don't know.

I love Yuki because she's experienced the most character development, and every little momment she has is magnified due to its scarcity. I thought the first season was awesome, but WHEN the second season comes (I can't believe it's taking this long) it'll definetly supercede the first as it'll focus on the fourth novel. I hope they broadcast it out of order again, and follow the same pattern with the mystery episode in between, and the main plot, "Dissaperance" starting the season off, and then coming back at the end.
