To a certain extent I think Nintendo has been looking for a studio like this but has had difficulty; in 2005 Nintendo published Geist by N-Space which had a Mature rating, if Geist was a better game or sold better I wouldn't have been surprised to hear that N-Space was aquired by Nintendo.
I didn't realize that game was M, but if it was, then I think Geist is a great example. Sure it was second party, but I remember reading that Miyamoto worked with the dev team on that one, meaning that Nintendo definately had a hand in it.
Were Nintendo to make one of their franchises a Mature rated title, my money would be in Kid Icarus, just because it's an old enough franchise that its announcement wouldn't get too many kids excited about it.
