Forums - Sales Discussion - Same point in time: PS3 3.5 million sales ahead of X360

If the PS3 doesn't get a price cut by September this argument will finally die. Oh, price cut where art thou.

Go Team Venture! I still don't get the Wii, PS Move,  and Kinect.

When two opponents are in a mile race together.
if one gets a 2 lap head start on the other, you cannot pass the finish line boasting about you won :P

The OP is very much relevant to today. People still love to point out that the PS3 is behind the two others without entering in the variables. 360 got a rather large head start, and the Wii is dirt cheap compared to HD and has appealed to a new market. The PS3 is doing fine relatively to those facts, yet the Wii is the true cinderella story this gen so far. PS3 might pull one, but much later in this gen.

PS3 is ahead of X360 by 3.5 million consoles from launch. PS3 is selling more systems than X360. It is only a matter of time PS3 will overtake X360 when PS3 console  price reaches optimal mass market penetration point of $299 and below.

PS3 has sold on average around 120 000 more consoles per month than XBox 360 for first 29 months of their lives on the market. Around 30k more PS3s sold every week than X360. PS3 will well and truly outsell XBox 360 and claim second place in console wars. PS3 outselling X360 by 20% more systems in same point in time comparison.

We have to bear in my PS3 has not had a real price cut yet. The PS3 price was reduced back in 2007 two times due to PS3 system modifications.

PS3 is ahead of X360 by 3.5 million consoles from launch.

Wrong!! If you compare sales starting from the launch date of PS3 to now, X360 has almost 3 million more sales.

Hmm why did you stop at 156 weeks?

The 360 has been out longer than that so this graph is not showing everything. Try this one and you will see a big difference.

The only thing that's important is that since the PS3 released the Xbox 360 has outsold it by about 3 million. So even if they released the same day the 360 would still be ahead. Aligning launches is meaningless.

Rubbish, of course you can.

Its the losers own stupid fault for sitting on the starting line scratching their arse rather than starting to run.

You cant then go to the race stewards and say "waahhh but i ran faster (when I eventually got going).... wahhhhh"

You lost.... thats how a race works.

your theory doesn't work in real life, or the analogy. The race does not start till all the participants are present and in position. MS(in this anology) started running before the gun even was fired. Yet for the entire sprint they are basking in the fact they are a few "FEET" ahead of the competition, with one of the later additions(the Wii) passing them. The PS3 is gaining rather quickly but they are carrying a rather large load to bear as well($600 price tag) which hinders them from just passing the gloat.

a retarded argument.

does a sports team care if they outscored their opponent in a quarter/period/half if they still lost the game

360 has like 8 million lead, and is ouselling ps3 every week for quite a long time now.  with the exception of this week and ff13 demo.  my common sense might be a bit off, but isn't it hard to catch up when you aren't selling more than your competitor

The Xbox 360 was out a full year before the PS3 so of course the sales will be higher. People really need to think about that before bashing the ps3.

I mean how many of those xbox sales include people who had to rebuy them because the xbox failed. At one time wasn't the failure rate 33%

Not to mention the price difference that has always been between the ps3 and xbox.

If you want to talk about sales, look what the Wii is doing to both, Xbox had a year on that too and the Wii is just smashing Xbox in sales week after week, same with PS3.

If you take off the first year of sales for the Xbox 360, what are the numbers from the time the PS3 came out and on with the xbox, i bet their isn't a huge gap.

You contradict yourself in your own post.  It was out a full year before the PS3 so "of course" the 360 will be ahead but yet the 360 also released a year before the Wii and that had no trouble passing it.

Playstation was the undisputed leader the last 2 gens, people can spin it all they want but the truth is the PS3 hasn't lived up to it's predecesors in terms of sales or market dominance.   The quality of the console and it's library is not in question, but Sony failed this gen in terms of sales.  Having said that, it will still sell better than any third place console has.

This isn't a foot race. Its all buisness.  This generation started when Xbox 360 was released. And the PS3 is NOT gaining quickly, nor is it even gaining. (Except for this week).

Yes... the PS3 is above the 360 in alligned.

Xbots dont think this is relevant though. (as i can see from the comments above)

When the price of the PS3 is dropped i expect the 3.5 million lead to be about 1.5-2million then that alligned lead will increase, rapidly.

Makes me laugh how the Xbots think their console is doing really well, despite being half the price of the PS3.

So starting from the day all 3 have been available for purchase the sales have been:

1 - Wii

2 - Xbox 360

3 - PS3

So what is your argument now?

And who's fault is it that it "has a rather large load to bear"?  People act like there was a price lottery before this gen started.  "Wii, you rolled a $250, congrats!  PS3, ohhh too bad, you rolled a $600.  Well, good luck with that!"
