Forums - Sales Discussion - Same point in time: PS3 3.5 million sales ahead of X360

These numbers are a good sign for the PS3. Once Sony can afford a price cut sales should increase nicely. I think the only thing of great concern for Sony should be the alligned launch numbers for NA. The 360 is way ahead even without the headstart. And now that Europe and more importantly England has adopted the 360 a price cut may not be enough to capture either of those areas.

PS3 is selling fine so no need to keep defending it. One thing going against the PS3 long term is as the Wii and 360 based keeps getting larger, more people will keep buying it because their friends have it. Almost all my friends have 360 cause we can play together. When we get together at work and others ask which systems to buy - we either say Wii if it is for their wife or grandma or kids or if it is for themselves then the 360. Popularity breeds more popularity. That's how it rolls.

um this is stupid aligning launches is meaningless. Lately except for a few weeks the 360 is out selling the PS3 week after week. The lead has grown not shrunk.

But the PS3 does have a chance if it gets a good price drop

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

if one gets a 2 lap head start on the other, you cannot pass the finish line boasting about you won :P

The OP is very much relevant to today. People still love to point out that the PS3 is behind the two others without entering in the variables. 360 got a rather large head start, and the Wii is dirt cheap compared to HD and has appealed to a new market. The PS3 is doing fine relatively to those facts, yet the Wii is the true cinderella story this gen so far. PS3 might pull one, but much later in this gen.

If you pick when you choose to start running, and you lose, you can't say "Well, we happened to start later, so RELATIVELY speaking, we actually won".  The fact the Wii is doing what it is doing, make the PS3 not look like it is in great shape.  It is Sony's fault they waited as long as they did, and released a system at the price point they did.

Using the logic here of when things were launch, the PS3 is CREAMING the 360 in sales NOW, compared to 2003.  It isn't even close either!   The PS3 NOW is outselling the 360 in 2003!

Is it time to fire up the "when will PS3 pass 360" thread again, so that everyone can be wrong all over again....

Wow, stuff like that makes Michael Pachter (however his name is spelled) look like he earns his money.  Time shows most people don't seem to have a flippin' clue.  Where is Final Fantasy XIII again?  One person call starcraft nasty names because of the comment that Vs XIII would be out second quarter 2010, as in that prediction was supposed to be too late.

In regards to the question: If it happens, why would it matter?  Beating the 360 in total sales, after Microsoft releases the next generation XBox system is pointless.  Then Microsoft builds yet another 5 million console lead over the next Playstation and we are told once more that lead doesn't matter, because we need to measure how a system is selling NOW, to how its rival sold a year before.

listen, it's impossible so say right now who will sell more LTD between the 360 and the ps3 but the fact that the ps3 is outpacing the 360 when you align the launches is a pretty good sign for the ps3. right now i'd give 50/50 odds on who comes out on top but regardless of who wins the final score is going to be close.

Coming out on top = finishing second to the Wii?

what......ps3 fans listen the system is great but stop trying to spin stuff. The fact remains that the 360 is and has been outselling the ps3 on a more regular basis than the other way around since the ps3 launched. Its time to just accept it.

The PS3 is more fun when its games are discussed, rather than its sales.  Give me more Uncharted and talk about how LBP isn't a kiddie game please.

Correct if Im wrong, but the PS3 has been outsold by the 360 since August of 2008. Doesn't that mean at some point in the future the launch aligned graph will start to show the 360 winning?

No, not necessarily.

The method the OP uses is flawed. It won't really show anything.(Just so you know).

In the method, the Ps3 of this (ending 17th april) week will compare to the week of the week ending 25th April from 2008.

So, for the X360 to "catch-up" on this graph, its 2009 sales would have to be better than the Ps3's 2010 sales. On this graph, the X360's price cut hasn't even appeared yet.

Not in the fanboy console wars it isn't and not from a Sony company standpoint it isn't.   It would show that the PS3 simply was the better system (Especially as it pertains to these fanboy wars).

The lead doesn't matter if you have a console that everyone buys (See Wii).

The lead does matter when you have two products trending on similar sales lines and are very close on a week to week basis and massive amounts of people like to claim one is better than the other.

Sony still has stronger brand loyalty than Microsoft at this point and this is a big reason why it still is trending above the 360 despite being twice it's price.   Had Sony not released a PS3 with a $600 price tag,  they certainly wouldn't be sitting in third place right now.   And they certainly would have much stronger sales. Although given the way it's played out,  I don't know if they are upset.  They won the format battle.  Which potentially aids their company moving forward significantly more than having a couple extra million console sales.
