Forums - PC Discussion - i7 or AM3

Sorry if this was asked aalredy I couldn't bear to search through.

I 'm lookin to buy or build a new PC and I'm not sure. I know intel is kicking ass these days but they're also kickin the wallet. I don't need bleeding edge so I was just wondering if I would be safe in three years (upgrades if necessary). Can I get the same performance from the phenom 940's at a lower price.

I am really out of the computer scene as of late so a lil help is appreciated

Oh and also if I step down to LGA 775 would i be shootin myself in the foot for the forseeable future

Get a Phenom 940. It'll last you three years easily.

Put your dollars into switching the GPU twice in that time period instead of wasting a lot on the CPU.

Sweet thanx

Go with the i7, it blows anything amd can throw at it away. I've had my Q6600 for over 3 years now and its still performing great, Intel will far outlive the amd junk.

The Halo francise is the most overrated bland game to ever hit the console market. It provides a bad name to all FPS that even showed effort at creating an original entertaining plot.

I probably have more ps3 games than you :/

The AMD junk?  HA i remember AMD being on top of Intel for years and years, since the release of there K7's, it wasn't until core2 that intel retook the crown.  There P4's were garbage

AMD lost their market after the Athlon. Their processor brand fell apart. Intel took control with the Conroe core.

While it is expensive, the Core i7 will last you a LONG while. Easily over 3 years, heck, probably over 5 years.

The i7 is the fastest processor out there right now, but it is expensive.  The AMD Phenom II and the core2 are a lot less money.   All of these processors are fast.

If your application if very memory intesive, not gaming, the i7 with its three DDR3 memory busses can give a 40% boost in performance.  In most games the i7 is not any faster.

In every benchmark all Core i7s are at the top of the charts... how are they not any faster if they are always in the lead? The issue resides on the fact that some game programmers suck and are to lazy to adjust for the i7's architexture.. still doesnt mean the i7s arent the best of the best to have. Shit, OC one to 4Ghz on air and lets talk fast.

Probably bumping this as it's old and I haven't logged in for a while, but the i7s are NOT that expensive.

They're very expensive. Cheapest i7 CPU is more than $300 here, and the motherboard another $300.
