Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A heads up to those looking forward to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Mario Galaxy was definitely playable at E3 '07...as it was playable at E3 '06 as well.  Come on people, it wasn't that long ago!

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Meh. Olympic games = button mashers, so generally I don't care anyway.

What interests me is Katamari and Dragon Blade were both on that list. The video I saw of dragon blade looked like fun combat, but bad design, and I've always enjoyed that Katamari series. So those two I have much higher hopes for than olympics.

It's very strange it got "game of the show" at Leipzig and especially that it beat Super Mario Galaxy. EGM aren't the only ones that have put down the game (at least the E3 playable version of it), Joystiq and others panned it as well. Maybe it improved dramatically from E3 to Leipzig? I guess we'll have to wait for the final version but I'll make a prediction now and I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong... The game will get a 76 average or under at Gamerankings.

If it gets a 76 average by the same critics and using the same mentality that got the Wii Sports a similar  average then it should do very well. If Mario & Sonic gets a 76 average similar to Rayman Raving Rabbids I guess it will just do pretty good. Very intriguing that a "worst" of E3 would get a "best" of Leipzig. I blame WiiFit.

The article had this to say about Katamari:

THE "MAYBE IT'S TIME TO RETIRE" AWARD

Katamari series

It's hard to believe Katamari's ball-rolling action once bowled us over with innovation.  From it's cool dual-analog control scheme to its gameplay that had us addicted to picking up trash, this franchise was a hit with both hardcore gamers and their girlfriends.  But as the fourth entry, Beautiful Karamari, hits the 360 this fall, the rehashes -- with their dull graphics and recycled environments -- are getting old.  Series creator Keita Takahashi has even jumped off this ball of confusion (his next project: Nobi Nobi Boy for the PS3); we wanna go with him.

Runner Up: Crash Bandicoot series

Shrug, some people tire of it and if it's bad, it's bad. I hope it's still good and it's just those reviewers saying "Wow, Beautiful Katamari is identical to Katamari Damacy". Although, if they want realistic graphics, isn't it a bit morbid to have an individually modeled well designed baby being rolled up in a ball only to grab its mother in about 30 seconds?

I guess the problem EGM (and Joystiq, etc) had with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is that the characters didn't play as expected. For example in the game's stats, Sonic has one of the fastest speeds, Mario one of the highest jumps, but when they played the game those stats didn't seem to show onscreen (the AI Sonic would come in dead last in the 100 meter dash, both Joystiq and EGM mentioned Sonic losing running events as strange). Basically from the E3 demo the characters performance depended solely on fine flailing rather than any of the character's stats coming into play. Maybe they worked on that and fixed it by the time Leipzig rolled around. I could see the problem the developers would have though, everyone would pick Sonic or the fastest characters for speed and acceleration if stats played a major part (or even minor) in the game and it would unbalance the game.

Ahh the Crash Bandicoot series... THE series that truly got me into platformers until I bought and played Super Mario 64. The original CB is definately one of my favourites. The crumbling bridge levels, although repetitive, are my faves in the game.

ON TOPIC: Miyamoto is supposed to be over-looking it. I hope that this doesnt deteriorate Mario's name. Sonic's legacy has already been beaten up to the core. I don't want Sega to screw up Mario too.

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.
"You'll never want to play any shooter with dual analog sticks ever again - it's THAT good.". - Gametrailers

I never really expected Sonic to be much faster than the other characters...that would suck for races...unless you're Sonic of course.

Sounds like another massive flailfest...not really interested that much. It'll sell from the Mario and Sonic names though...eh. If it's good enough I'll at least rent it hehe.

This isn't that bad for me though, definitely frees up potential money for the important games.

I had always hoped for this.

Cmon Montana, this is fanboyish. It's ok to say "I played a game and it's crap, so I'm glad it fails", but you shouldn't hope for a game to turn out bad, just because it's not on your preferred console.
