So I guess Dragon Quest X will be successful as FFXIII.

in japan yes... worldwide no.

The reason Dragon Quest was not famous in the West until DQ8 is because Enix never really pushed the title back then... After the merger, things changed, SE did serious advertising, got rid of the name "Dragon Warrior" (that name works if the game is action, fighting or a genre like that, not a JRPG), and brought the original name "Dragon Quest", they put the FFXII demo in the game for the US release, and a lot of people in the West finally got to know the game, for good or for bad...

Now Iwata is saying that they are going to push Dragon Quest in the West, if they do an awesome job like Sony did with FF7 (except for the co-publishing) we could see another powerful SE franchise worldwide...

Grandia aint squares

Take my love, take my land..

It gives me a little faith in the world that KH pulled third.

Wow, look what new gameplay does for a franchise, kids! Plus, adding Disney characters is just a boatload of fun...

KH still offers some of the best JRPG gameplay around. People may like LO and that kind of nonsense but give me a twist like BD and its action system any day of the week. KH was what got me back into JRPGs after 2-3 years of ignoring them.

As for the Dragon Quest numbers, we'd say in some ways they're even more impressive, given the series' limited popularity in the West.

Well, Dragon Quest started to get good sales in the West since Dragon Quest 8, and Final Fantasy exploded in the West since Final Fantasy 7, they're near alignment that way... The thing is, Final Fantasy has a lot more games than Dragon Quest, it should be interesting comparing them in even scenarios...

Dragon Quest has never really had good sales in America.  The highest selling games here were the original Dragon Warrior (which is anywere from 300-000 to 500-000, no one knows), Dragon Quest VIII (400,000 copies) and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (500-000).

Since then, all the titles have gone downhill in sales.  With the latest DS titles reaching a dismal rate of under 100,000 each so far.  Mostly due to no marketing and rather poor localizations.

Frankly, if you added all of Dragon Quests games sold outside Japan and called them 'international sales', it would add up to about 1 Million of the 47 Million on that chart.  And thats for America, Europe, Australia, etc. combined.

One can only hope they'll fix this in the future.  Nintendo says they're going to help market DQIX, but I doubt America is going to just jump on the games unless SE shows some actual effort on their part (additional marketing and quality control).

Six upcoming games you should look into:
