As part of a corporate strategy meeting, Square Enix yesterday revealed the lifetime, worldwide sales figures for three of their biggest franchises.

And no, they don't mean The World Ends With You. The three biggest (at least in terms of units sold) are Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts, and when you combine every game ever released in those franchises, you get the following (lifted straight from the presentation):

So, yes, if you ever find yourself wondering to the night sky why Square Enix insist on milking these franchises - particularly Final Fantasy - to within an inch of their lives, that's why.

As for the Dragon Quest numbers, we'd say in some ways they're even more impressive, given the series' limited popularity in the West.

Well, Dragon Quest started to get good sales in the West since Dragon Quest 8, and Final Fantasy exploded in the West since Final Fantasy 7, they're near alignment that way... The thing is, Final Fantasy has a lot more games than Dragon Quest, it should be interesting comparing them in even scenarios...

I'd rather have updated info on sales of each mainline FF title. Especially FFXII since last time they revealed its sales was in March 2007, just one month after its release in Europe.

Impressive numbers.

Anyway, I agree on the chicken and egg thing about milking the franchises. I guess if you divide those total sales with the numbers of games released per franchise, Kingdom Hearts is actually the highest (Am I right that there are 3 Kingdom Hearts games released so far?).
There have probably been more than thirty games with the name Final Fantasy, so those 85 millions aren't that great actually.

Like? Squeenix doesn't have many big franchises outside those three
