Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why GTA IV, one of the 2 best games of this gen, received so much hate.

10s and even 9s are given out way too easily by reviewers these days.

Want to know why it was hated? The REAL REASON?

Simple, they released a half ass GTA.

Graphics, no one cared about graphics in GTA, sure it's great and all but it seems that's all they did with a good physics engine. Story was good personally but won't appeal to everyone(same for every GTA), and the biggest problem... Amount of stuff to do. Like what the fuck.

Every GTA added more to do, san andreas being the biggest leap, you could now work out, etc etc etc etc etc. GTA4 they took that all away, made world much smaller, and it's not varied like before. GTA was about variety, GTA4 you have city... city... and more city. San Andreas had a bunch of towns, huge forests, 3 huge cities, a huge fucking mountain etc etc etc.

It was hated because they released a half ass GTA, GTA5 better be different.

You've actually answered the question in the OP. It was 'hated' so much because of how hilarious the review scores were. If it had got a metacritic of around 92 or so, no-one would have cared. But when reviewers start claiming it to be so good, people take steps to correct them.

I think said people were validated when GTAIV for the PC received comments of 'exactly the same as the console versions' alongside scores of about 92

QFT

If it wasn't for the hype inflated scores this game got, there would have been a lot less hate.

Rock Star apparently wanted to go for "realism" of some sort in the game. They wanted the game to be seen as high drama, and so on. They got away from the sheer mayhem of sandbox mode single player, and had players forced through a story. Check the comments to see. It is more than just a fanboy angle.

GTA IV was a much better game than Saints Row. It was my first GTA game I have ever played and it was an excellent game. I rate GTAIV 9 out of 10.

GTA IV received several perfect scores when it was released, yet almost as soon as it did it received tons of negative feedback from the fan community.  However, I don't think any game has brought a city to life so well or had such a likeable protagonist in recent memory as did GTA IV. I agree

The one ingredient missing from previous GTA games was the graphics, and GTA IV remedied that too. What?! Graphics were good in it's days.

However, I think I know why GTA IV became so hated.  PS3 fans didn't like it because it was on the 360.  360 fans didn't like it because many reviewers said its best version was the PS3 one, and Wii fans didn't like it because their console couldn't run it. You think that's the reason? How did you come to your conclusion? Personally I think your reasons are a load of bull and just plucked out of thin air. PS3 fans didn't like it cause it's on the 360? Why did millions of them buy it then? Which idiot reviewer said the sub HD blurry PS3 version is the best? I doubt many Wii fans have played it as extensively as anyone else and I doubt they even bother to comment much about it since it's not on their system

GTA IV hated by more people than almost any other game, yet still just as good as originally reviewed.

I think the game received so much hate because it didn't live up to all the hype. I think for a series that is as big as GTA series doesn't live up to its hype, then I think that game is a disappointment. I think some people had some troubles playing it on the 360. There were complaints about the game freezing and how there were some huge flaws to the game. I personally never played the game but I didn't like the game because they hyped it up so much and it just didn't live up to its hype.

It is true that the city in GTA4 is more of a background rather than a playground, but that's not necessarily bad.

The only non-debatable weakness is lack of mission variety

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

I hated it because I was completely bored with it. If it weren't for the cell phone, it would've been much better, IMO.

That being said, the technical merits of it were impressive. But just because a game is technically impressive doesn't mean it's good or fun. I found it to be neither.

Too true, too true, same as with Crysis. What's also similar in both cases is that the technical achievement isn't that awesome when you check the seams (incredibly stupid AI and physics in Crysis, massive pop-in and slowdowns in GTA IV).

Again; GTA IV was not GTA to me, it was a pale clone of the past titles, much like newer Need for Speed titles are.

We didn't like it because:

No parachute, no planes, no Quads, no huge map.

Imho San Andreas is still the best....

Instead they removed everything that made San Andreas fun and added, internet,
Annoying girlfriend, annoying cousin, a lot of extra's but all lesser than it's San Andreas predecessor...
