No, this is something that Sony has been NEEDING to do for a long time. The only thing about this strategy that hindered the ps3 was the incorporation of Blu-Ray, which gave it an extremely high price tag.
Sony has the capability to make a device that can compete with the iPhone, and a device that will have hardcore gamers on its side and developers support it with plenty of content. Going down that road is inevitable if they want to stay competitive in the current market, and they still have ana dvantage if they wre to go down that path soon.
However, the longer they wait, the more popular the iPhone becomes, and the more it becomes accepted as a proper gaming device. Then Sony won't have much place else to go, with the DS beating them solely on games, and the iPhone being the multimedia/gaming device they had originally intended to be.
