Forums - Gaming Discussion - Have you ever played a black sheep of a gaming franchise.

During the SNES days I remember renting and beating Final Fantasy IV when it first came out back in 91 and I loved it.  Then a year or so down the road I remember seeing Final Fantasy Mystic Quest in the video store and I instantly grabbed it and man was that game a piece of crap.  It felt nothing like the two Final Fantasy games I played before hand.

Have you ever played a game in a series or franchise that you'd thought would come out good but in the end become an ultimate failure.

I own the first three X-Com games on my PC (UFO: Enemy Unknown, Terror From the Deep, Apocalypse). The first one I ever played was the second one, which is universally recognised as a shitty carbon copy of the first with a few features that renders it virtually unplayable, but I loved it. Had serious trouble in getting back to it later though.

This is actually totally different from what you asked, but somewhat fits with the title. I'll think of a better story later, I promise. =P

Resident Evil: Dead Aim (Gun Survivor)

I absolutely loved The Legend of Zelda 2: Adventures of Link, but according to most people that is the series' black sheep.

I played those terrible Zelda games on the CD-I

I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly. What Video Game Character Are You?

I would consider the CD-I versions more of the black sheep of the zelda series.

I woulsn't say they're the black sheep as much as they are the hoof and mouth desease.

I'm hurt! Oh, owie. I loved the X-com games! The second one was definitely a carbon copy of the first, no arguement there, but I loved it! My friends and family and I would fight about who could have time on my parents computer to play it! We slightly solved it by having someone play X-com on the PS and X-Com 2 on the PC. Still had 4 people waiting for a turn though. Side Note: This is the only game I've been better at when inebriated, hehe.

On Topic: I played Final Fantasy Mystic Quest too. Wow, what a horrid game.

Edit:  I feel sheepish.  I missed you saying "but I loved it.".  My bad.  Try out Rebelstar Tactical Command on the GBA.  It's amost exactly the same as the old X-Com games.

Super Mario Sunshine

Even though Mario spawned a million spin-offs, Sunshine was supposed to be one of those instant classic Mario games, like SM64, SMW, SMB3 and SMB has become. I hate to say this, but playing Sunshine didn't have that "magic" its predecessors held. Maybe it is because it wasn't as revolutionary, if at all, compared to the others, or maybe I'm getting too old for Mario... nah. I'm not saying it was a bad game, just not on par with the others, just okay. I consider Sunshine to be just as much of a Black Sheep as Super Mario Bros 2.

Sonic 3D Blast

I know, there are a lot of bad Sonic games, but this was probably the first really bad Sonic game I've played. Considering how much I loved all previous Sonics on Sega Genesis, 3D Blast was a huge let down for me.

FinalFantasyX-2 now that is a shocking game i was hopeing for more of a sequel that made sense like they ALL searched for Tidus instead only Yuna,Rikku and some randomer named Paine.
Onimusha2:SamuraisDestiny i dont think it is a black sheep but it doesnt fully fit in with the rest of the series because it doesnt have Samanosuke in it at all but the other 3(Onimusha:Warlords,Onimusha:DemonSeige and Onimusha:DawnofDreams)had him in and he was playable and the main character in Onimusha:Warlords and DemonSeige. For people who dont know SamanosukeAkechi is called TenkaiNankobo in Onimusha:DawnofDreams.
