Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Business Insider: GTA Chinatown Wars bellyflops (88,704 sold in US)

Why though?  The Wii doesn't need a GTA game.  The DS certainly didn't either.

I'm not a GTA fan at all, but I certainly expected Chinatown Wars to do better than it did.  Ninty fans hate GTA confirmed!

I'm going to say something really polemic here but I think that this generation no console needs GTA.

I bought GTA IV, I even bought the special edition but honestly it's not my favorite game on my PS3 and it isn't my most played game on the console, the game didn't move any console and I'm not very sure how sucessful a sequel'll be. I guess GTA'll never meet the sales or popularity of San Andreas.

Maybe it will have legs.. like most DS titles, there are people on the comments of the game predicting 3-6million LTD sales.. we will see.

Well add 200k for the R4 guys, I saw some numbers at the torrents........... and that's why we can't have nice things.

How did Vgchartz over track it by that much? Man, that is really disappointing.

95% of gamers don't know they are noobs, the 5% who do won't be noobs for long

Add that as well and possibly more for the PSP guys, I saw Resistance torrents there too.

Edit - By the way, you think we could add at least 500k to each PSP GTA while we are at it?

Can't exactly use the piracy argument against GTA sales when the other handheld GTAs are on pirated handheld as well.

That is really disappointing for a GTA game. I mean it was the first GTA to be on a Nintendo system in awhile but you would at least hope the brand appeal would have carried over. However, it didn't seem to do that. No we'll see how it can do in the long run and most importantly this holiday season.

I do think, though, a lot of it had to do with releasing around Pokemon Platinum. I don't care what series you think you are... releasing around a Pokemon game is never good.

While I'm not particularly interested in this game, you've hit the nail on the head as to the low sales.  Piracy kills game sales at alarmingly high ratios for titles such as this one that unfortunately appeal to too many people who are also tech-minded (and immoral) enough to just download the torrent and use an R4.

I like homebrew, and used to have a couple flashcarts for playing with it, but the effects of piracy on the industry are so negative that it is any gamer's interest to help put a stop to it whenever possible. Even humoring those who mention they are involved in piracy, ie hesitating to boot them from forums at once, is unacceptable.  We really need gamers who care about the industry to stop wasting time on pointless issues (obsessing about "censorship" when an idiotic game like Manhunt isn't published) and start focusing attention on how we can help companies take whatever legal actions they can against website and individuals who engage in piracy.

i have an r4 but bought it anyway

the r4 is for games i would never buy, which is why i have 25 or so boxed ds games

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

Does everyone quickly forget that GTA: LCS sold over 5M+ on the PSP which is a FAR EASIER handheld to pirate games onto? No need to purchase a 3rd party device, it is like 5 minute firmware install. All you need is your USB cord and your Memory Stick.

This is true. Yet no Journalist will report this. Instead they'd rather pigeonhole the DS and Nintendo platforms in general as kiddie and not for "Mature" games. If GTA has legs and sells well on the DS, none of the Journalist will ever write a correction. This is why I do not care what these guys say.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
