Forums - Sony Discussion - RUMOR: Final Fantasy XIII Demo is 5.9GB

There has been a rumor flying around that the Final Fantasy XIII demo (the one that shipped in Japan with Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete) was in fact 5.9GB. For those of you who are wondering why this is a big deal, think of it this way:

The demo was approximately 30-60 minutes long, and while Sony´s  Blu-Ray can hold up to ten times that, its competetor's media format can not. So what does this say for the Xbox 360's version? Who knows, but it seems as if the PlayStation 3 version will be the one to look for.

The Blu-Ray Disc holds 45.9GB of data on it. Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete takes up about 30GB of that due to the fact that the video runs at 27.8MB/s and the audio tracks (one English, the other Japanese) both run at 1.9MB/s. Couple this with the trailers and excess data on the disc and it makes up about 40GB. So what fills the other 5.9GB of space? Why, the demo of course.

So the real question is, will the Xbox 360 version be of lesser quality than the PlayStation 3 version, or will the PS3 version be downgraded to match that of the 360s?

Or will the 360 version utilize a plethora of discs?

Lovely how they completely skip out on that possibility.

360 will be on several discs.

PS3 mignt need 2 discs...

We have already had a thread on this very topic.

And we reached a conclusion. It will need 4 to 6 discs for the 360 version.

The 360 has compression going for it whereas the PS3 version doesn't have re-use data on every disc like the 360 version does.

Just because there was 5.9GB of additional space does not mean that the demo took up all of it...

Just kiss the tip.

PS3- one to two discs
360- five to six discs

Itagaki said back in '05 that to get the Dead or Alive 360 intro movie on the DVD 9 in a quality that would be suitable to him (in high def) that it would take up at least 2 gig of space on the DVD 9 which would only leave 7 gig of space available for the whole game and that was just for a short roughly two minute intro movie.

FFXIII is going to be compressed for the 360 version and it is still going to be on mutliple discs.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

No, a 360 game disc can only use 7GB of data.

You think that's bad? The Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo was 1 gig on the PSN. That demo was only 15 minutes long! There's no way that game will fit on the Xbox 360!

Of course compression techniques have stood still these last 4 years so there is no way a video could be compressed into less space now with better quality either is there?

The more likely reasons for the demo being this size is there will have been little optimisation on file sizes, there maybe redundant data, there will be very little compression. All of these can be used to shrink that size down tremendously anyway. I'd be surprised if FFXIII was on more than 5 disks, I;d expect 4 tops to be honest.
