Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is there a huge difference between 720p or 1080p HDTV?

I'm just asking cause I'm thinking about getting me a new TV. Its time for me to leave that SDTV format and quickly switch. I'm waiting for Black Friday to come, cause I know its going to be cheaper to find a decent 720p or 1080p HDTV.

Is there a major difference will I miss out on some little graphic enhancements?

To me and most people: No.

If you really want one and want to spend the money I would still recommend getting one since things are probably going to be moving more that direction, but for the time being and the next 5-ish years (pulling that number out of my ass) 720p works perfectly fine.

If you do go 720p, you will be able to get a bigger and nicer TV for the price of a smaller 1080p TV too.

The difference is noticeable, but you need to have a big screen as well as sit the perfect distance away from it as well.

It depends on the size of the screen you want as well. If you are only wanting 40" or less, then stick with 720p. You will not notice the 1080p on less than a 40" screen. If you want a 50" screen, then get 1080p.

Also, cost plays a huge part as well. If you can get a 42" 1080p for $300 more than a 37" 720p, then go for it. But if you are paying $500 or more for this jump...I wouldn't bother. But the important part is the size of screen you want.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Do you plan on buying either Bluray or HD-DVD or subscribing to HD service? If so, you will want 1080p. If you will be watching regular SD TV without the HD service 720 will be fine.

720p is great and most games that say 1080p are not native 1080p and only upscaled. If you watch lots of movies and have a great sound system then 1080p is the way to go, TV shows do not come in 1080p, just a digital signal and how the Tv shows that is up to the TV, i've heard 1080i at the most. You also need a Tv over 42" to get the real feel of 1080p from what i have read.

You see I have no problem with my TV size I can have a 19' to 40'. I'm just trying to figure out if 1080p is worth it or not. Is it more important? Is there really a noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p and is it being used?

Really I'm not buying either format right now. I don't watch DVD much. I go to the movies alot. So Blu-ray or HD-DVD is not getting my money. I do watch TV alot. If I put my situation on a pie chart, it would be:

15% Watch TV
40% Play 360
45% Computer

So really I don't need Comcast HD plan. I watch NFL and NBA, MLB but not much.

So actually I take back I don't watch TV much. O_O

I have a 40" LCD 720p Sony Bravia and things look awesome on it. I go over to my buddies house that has a 42" (I think that's how big his is, might be 46") 1080p LCD Sony Bravia and things look pretty comparable to me at least. It could be because mine is 40" like davygee said and I suppose that would make sense. I suppose it just depends on the kind of money you want to spend.

Either option will be a huge jump up from your 19" SDTV.

If you are using big display (+40") you'll spot the difference for sure.

Sports look good enough in 720p, and 360 doesn't use 1080p for games hardly at all if I have my facts straight.

I'd go with a good-sized 720p TV unless you see a 1080p TV for a fair price...you may have more 1080p content in a couple years...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
