Forums - Sales Discussion - Is Wii Number 1 for good?

So if the PS3/360 is only appealing to the 25% of forward thinking gamers with HDTVs that would explain why the wii is doing so well and will never be cought, since afterall, its reaching 3x as many gamers...but..on the other hand you said HD is the future of gaming. This ofcourse isnt true but you have basically contradicted almost every point made in the previous post.

Bioshock isnt really an example of a modern game being shallow because of casal gamers, its an example of a game trying to be a good pc and a good console game at the same time, to maximise sales.

System shock was a great PC game and a typical PC game, alot of technical depth and so on, but thats not what makes a good console game. You have MS to blame for this, pushing PC games onto console. I believe the market worked best when cheap consoles got mario 64 and expenisve pc's got system shock. 2 entirely different markets, not this mess we have now of expensive consoles with HDDs and cut down, sloppy versions of PC games with poor controls.

To return to topic, i beleive that the world as a whole isnt yet ready to embrace HD in any form, be it movies or games and since the 360 and the PS3s primary sales pitch is HD (and HD movies to an extent), this is always going to put them behind the Wii. Next (ie not current) gen will all be HD and by that time the HD market will be alot more established, we will have a final HD movie format and there will be far more HDTV owners after the digital push at the end of this decade.

By the way, i do own a HDTV and i use it to play HD movies with great enjoyment.

I don't understand, in your first paragraph you say that I'm wrong and HD gaming is not the future.

Then in your last paragraph you say that HD gaming is the future.

The present, yes, HD is not the standard.  That's obvious if 25% of the homes have HDTVs.  But what I'm saying is more and more every year HDTVs are entering people's homes.  This will draw more interest to HD gaming (and movies).  Like I said before, this doesn't all of a sudden stop Wii sales... I'm saying it increases HD gaming sales.  The Wii can keep its same pace while the other two increase as well (and that doesn't mean they'll ever catch the Wii).

I disagree with the dumbing down for the masses discussion.  PC exclusives are just as bad as multiplatform games, it's not neccessarily because of porting games to consoles.  FarCry was a great concept that had a lot of potential but went downhill around level 4 when the mutants were introduced. FEAR was pretty graphics with a gimmick feature that was around since 1999... but they made it look cool so it dazzelled people that are all about eye candy.  Doom 3 was a joke and so on.  (yes, these were later ported but they were all originally developed specifically for the PC).  It's gotten so bad that I only play about 1, maybe 2, great titles a year on PC.  That's sad... and it's not just because of porting games to consoles.  Civ4 was great.  Warhammer40K was great.  GalCiv2 was great.  Homeworld2 was great... when was the last great PC FPS? HL2? and before that?  Deus Ex?  So basically we get one every 4 years?

So far the PS3 is selling faster then xbox/GC did, and the PS3 is selling at the same rate as the 360, and all this time the PS3 has been priced alot more then those systems, to imagine the PS3 not selling more then the 360 over its lifetime is crazy. The wii is selling as a gimmick right now an due to its price.

It is selling faster momentarily it but its total is below the GCs total for any territory or WW combined. Also The XBOX has sold more in the first ten months than the PS3 or Xbox 360 and most of the difference has come from Japan. In the US the 360 is selling faster and in europe it is neck and neck. The PS3 has to overcome a years difference in order to beat the 360 and so far nothing indicates it will. It is only a matter of time(3-4 years) until the next console is launched(XBOX 720, PS4, and/or Wii2). If Sony wants to beat the 360s LTD it will have to have sold 8 million by the end of this year to have a shot elsewise in 2010 it is going to have to start over iwth the PS4.

No, you wouldn't have.

10 Years ago you would have been playing at much lower resolutions on a VooDoo1.

When I bought my 8MB Creative Labs VooDoo2 in February of 1998, it was the best thing availible on the market, and it could only display at 800x600 res.

Yes, HD gaming has been availible for years on the PC, but not everyone wants to play on an uncomfortable chair in front of a small 21 inch monitor.

Console gamers prefer big couches with big screen TVs. We are talking about the Wii, 360, and PS3, right? That is what the original poster asked, right? Or does stating lies like "I have been playing with 1280x1024 for almost 10years" somehow discredit the 360/ps3 as if HD gaming is not important? HD is a new feature in console gaming. The topic of discussion.

10 years ago he could of been using a Matrox and playing on a Mitsibishi monitor at 1280x1024. The XGA standard has been around since 1990 and which is 1024x768 resolution and that is higher than 800x600. Rememebr not all computer games were 3d back than. 7 years ago I was playing at 1600x1200 resolution on my PC in 2000 with my Radeon that had 64 megs of RAM. TheRage Pro which came out in 1998 was capable of doing 1600x1200 display in 2d and some games did support that though the monitors were expensive.

Also the ATI Mach64 was capable of 1280x1024 resolution in 1994. and it supported DOOM at this rez.]

It should be noted that DOOM was not a 3D game but

XGA 1990 80*25 1024*768 65,536 1 MB

So now we're talking about 2D? Exactly how many 2D AAA games have been released this current gen?  I know consoles are slow to catch up with consoles, but really, I'm pretty sure that everyone cares about 3D HD now.  I don't think people really consider Gauntlet on Xbox Live in 720p part of the HD movement. ;)

But who knows... maybe they do.

We are talking about gaming and more specifically gaming ten years ago and ten years ago many PC games were 2 d. Myst, Fallout, Final Fantasy 7, and so on. We were talking about resolution. Yes there are still 2D games out there Street Fighter Pro and XBOX liveis getting a slew of them as well.

In short this conversation was about gaming and HD. Not a 3D qualifier.

the original topic was regarding the wii keeping its top spot and my answer is yes, it offers far more than its competitor due to the fact its main selling point isnt HD, which the vast majority of the market doesnt have or doesnt even understand.

The machine also manages to retain the core reason for console gaming, simple fun.

let me clearify this, I say "almost 10 years ago" the word almost mean I"m not 100% percent sure on the exact time(bad memory).  It was my estimate and I admit I was wrong alittle, should be more like 8-9 years ago.  I'm not talking about AAA 3D titles, just resolutions of my display.  IF you saying people only care about "3D HD now" then why sony is pushing it so hard with their blue ray movie ?? I'm sure thats not 3D.  like Redspear say we are talking gaming and HD not about AAA 3D titles.

I got a 50' plasma able to display 1080i , if I want I can plug in my computer to that TV and play far better shooters that are available for PC.  IF you think Halo, Resistence Fall of men, and killzone 2 are the best thing ever made, then I'm sure the millions and millions of counter strike fans will not agree. nothing have come close to the popularity of counter strike eventhough its a very old game.

and if you think 2D suck, then you havent play Diablo 2.  That game popularity lasted like 5 years with thousands of people playing it day in and day out.  Starcraft, diablo2, counter stirke, these are all classics.

yes, they will stay ahead for the rest of this console war. I like the 360 as well, but they just don't have enough japanese support. Maybe nexgen, Microsoft can get some more japanese fans.

Now come on, that is just a blatently ignorant statement.  Besides, isn't that what the anti-Nintendo camp said about the DS when it first launched?
