Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Neilsen: CORRECTION - People buy Wiis and actually DO USE THEM

@Naum: No, you are seeing it correctly.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

@ arius and naum

no you are both not seeing it correctly here are the stats:
minute usage per month: (roughly)

PS3 - 1067
360 - 1150
Wii - 540

Wait, this is average right?

Because you know it's vastly harder to maintain a higher average over a greater number of owners. Which means that the PS2 is doing really well considering it's highest install base. With the PS3 doing terrible due to it's very focused core orientation. A smaller group is easier to produce a higher average. Since this is the case PS3 isn't getting played as much as it's need to be for it's hardcore small install in comparison to say the PS2.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

all this shows is that out of the total minutes played between consoles, wii takes up the #2 position. That doesn't mean much because it has ~50 million consoles.

Just to break it down for you, if wii and 360 were almost tied in that graph it would mean that 360 gamers game twice as much. LOLz nice try

Nielsen is American data, so your numbers above are way off.  Or in your language: LOLz nice try.

the point is you don't even know what this chart says. at 22m vs 17m 360 is still beating wii by more than 25%

I never claimed anything of the kind. However, you said 360 gamers game twice as much. So again: LOLz nice try.

PS3- 64 - 6.8 - 2.42
360- 78 - 7.1 - 2.15
Wii- 58 - 5.0 - 5.8 1.78

Only the graph that ken posted was originally wrong. This statistic is correct.

the first column here is average minutes per session
the second column is average days played per month
the third column is average session played on those days

you multiply them together and you get how much each owner user plays their console.

EDIT: User makes more sense because that would allow for higher play time (combined) on fewer consoles. For example 4 people playing an hour equals 4 hours on nielsen statistics.

@inigo
add up those numbers I posted and you'll find your twice as much.

@Jayderyu
This is definitely not average, this is a total

LOL!

I guess these numbers make a lot more sense...

However, it is like what someone said above...the BS travels faster than the truth sometimes (mostly due to the LAWL factor...).

What are you talking about? There aren't twice as many Wii's as Xbox's in the US, it's 23:17. As such, Wii only fares slightly worse than 360.

Wait, what are you talking about? All I was saying is that the false info. will travel faster than the true info....must have quoted the wrong guy dude.

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

What I see is the Wii trending upward.

yes it is, because the wii has a higher install base and therefore higher total minutes played.

look

Say the wii has an install base of 10m. Each gamer plays 500 minutes a month

The 360 has an install base of 5m. Each gamer plays 1000 minutes a month.

ps3 has install of 2m. each gamer plays 1000 minutes.

10m x 500min= 5billion minutes

5m x 1000min= 5billion minutes

2m x 1000min = 2billion minutes

total minutes= 12billion minutes

5billion/12billion equals .41667 = ~42%

now, if the next month wii sells double its install base, and the others stay the same, then wii now totals 10billion minutes because

20m x 500min= 10 billion.   Now 10billion/17billion = 59%

now maybe you can see that install base is what matters here and not how much individuals game. Proving that wii owners actually do play dramatically less.

@theprof00 - And what's your point? Of course Wii owners don't play as much on avg. They are casual players, many of whom never played on consoles at all prior to Wii.

No one should expect Wii's casual base to play anything close to the HD system's core base. Also the type of games on those systems tend to require much longer playing sessions.

What this chart proves, even moreso now that it's corrected, is Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy is working and they've taken people who the industry thought would never play and collectively got them playing even more hours of gaming per month than the 360's core audience.
