Forums - Sony Discussion - how come sony doesnt have titles like nintendo?

Wow, I'm surprised there haven't been a fanboy war, but there's only a couple posts so maybe I just jinxed it XD.

@ topic, I thought Sony was starting to appeal more to "casuals."

sony generally it'a cult hit console.

look at ico and shadow of colossus.

their most main stream game are, gran turismo, god of war and now killzone and lbp.

Why haven't Sony games sold as much? Because Nintendo makes their games to appeal to everyone while sony makes games to appeal to specific market segments.

Why do more kids own Wii's rather than PS3s? Because Sony doesn't cater to everyone the same way Nintendo does. Sony caters to a specific market segment. 18-30s.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

I know this is going to sounds like trolling but I don't mean it that way - less choices.

With Sony theres all the games you named: Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo, God of War, Killzone, Uncharted, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, etc.

But with Nintendo basically your choices are limited to Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, Metroid, etc.

Sure theres other great games like Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, Madworld, and there are multiplats like Rock Band, but if you base your decisions off of ratings/word of mouth, all you will hear about is the latest Mario or other big Nintendo game. There are more great choices, but you don't hear about them outside of big gaming sites like this or IGN.

Fixed for accuracy.

There are two problems with your argument. The first, if you're going to say people are "limited" to some Nintendo titles it's probably not a good idea to leave out 80% of their catalogue. Every game I placed up there has appeared on the Wii in some form, some of which will or may be getting sequels in the near future. I didn't even cover Wiiware.

Second, the point was that Nintendo's titles sell massively and consistently, but the way you write it out makes it sound like the opposite because of ratings or word of mouth. The difference is that Nintendo sells to a much more diverse audience because of this. Sure, you might not hear about some of these game but that's because no one feels the need to hype these games as the savior like with most PS3 exclusives (the ones published by Sony in particular). Mario Kart Wii didn't even have a fraction of the hype Killzone 2 did and will end up selling around 20 million more units in its lifetime.

Mario has been on the market for 20+ years and has been the focus of Nintendo without fail. Sony has never made such a commitment. Some things just stick.

lol ahh know nothing yet think they know everything.

Um GT kid, on PS on PS2 on PS3 ? 50+ million in sales, more coming to PSP and PS3

Yahh no commitment, LMAO.

There's a lot of reasons why Sony hasn't gotten any franchise to be as powerful as any given Nintendo one, particularly the Mario one. One, Sony is not an industry pioneer with any of their franchises; Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda literally defined their genres, and their sequels frequently re-define their genres to some degree. Two, Sony is a hardware-first company, while Nintendo is a company that focuses on hardware second and software first (meaning Nintendo has a distinct advantage in the software department). Three, Sony hasn't been around in the industry as long anyway, thus they haven't been able to build up any reasonable fan base for a given franchise.

There are other reasons too, of course, but most of them relate to those three points. And they do have at least one franchise under their belt that has a higher-than-normal level of popularity, the Gran Turismo series.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Its because Sony relied on third parties to get through the PS1 and PS2 era. Resident Evil ,Final Fantasy, Tekken, GTA etc all defined the platform. Sony never anticipated losing their exclusivity and reprecussions of it. Your now witnessing an avalanche of the PS empire comming to an end. Microsoft is wise at mass marketing Halo as big and wide as they possibly can. Halo= Xbox. Microsoft will never have a similar avalanche as Sony is right now. Their base is secure with Halo/Fable/Forza never losing exclusivity. Their biggest IPS's. Microsoft also has the lucrative 11-18 demographic while Sony has the aging 25-34.
