So where does the conclusion that Wii owners don't use their console come from? Is Luke Plunkett an anti Wii guy?

Yes, he is. He trolls the Wii userbase there every chance he gets.  Here are a few of his other flamebait posts:

"So, How Many Wii Games Are Any Good?" - He never ran the PS3, 360 "Games-At-A-Glance" but jumped right on the Wii one.  Edge gave a few reasons why the Wii average for games scoring an 85% or above is a bit slim, but Luke ignores that part of the article.

"How, Exactly, Do You Make a Big Selling Wii Game?" - He took the Reggie misquote and ran with it... very fast.

Oh, so he's the Kotaku equivalent of James Ransom-Wiley (also Jem Alexander), i get it.

kasz, are you sure they don't record say, watching a Blu ray on the ps3?

@happy squirrel
According to the graph, more time is being spent on the wii over the entire population. It does this by computing all the total minutes over the scope of the population and dividing the total by it.

People who own PS3 and 360 play more, but there are simply less consoles and therefore less gaming minutes total.

I wrote above how many minutes the average users play
"ps3 users each play 1053 minutes per month
360: 1190
wii: 516"

It's in the report.

Consoles tend to be used similarly in three distinct groups. The first group includes the Xbox 360
and PlayStation 3. These two consoles have the highest active user percent measures of any
other console Nielsen measures. They also have the highest average usage days and daily
average number of sessions. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have more features and functions
than other consoles Nielsen measures.

I just dont get how having a bunch of 25-34 year old adult males buying LBP is any threat to Mario and Pokemon. Mario and Pokemon is actually being sold to kids while LBP are sold to grown men who love the PS1.

You guys need to stop considering adults in their 30-40 playing games as something of an exception.

There are a lot of us !

We are the gen that played heavilly on PC and then some of us started to play on consoles.

I never had a PS1, I had a PS2 and I'm 36 and I have a lot more disposable income to spend on games than most of the teenagers...

Heck I raid hardcore in Wow and the majority of the guild I belong too is over 25 and we are by far the most successfull guild on the server... Students are not the only one that game these days !Heck realistically I have a lot more free time than students because I have no homework and don't have to take a second job to pay for my education....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I just saw this as well.  Here are the real usage numbers for January from Neilson.

McMillan confirmed via email that "the report labels are incorrect" in the original study. In January 2009 the correct usage minute percents were as follows: PlayStation 2: 23.7%, Wii: 20.7%, Xbox 360: 18.2%, PlayStation 3: 9.0%, Xbox: 7.9%, and GameCube: 3.3%.

As you can see from this revised data, Microsoft Xbox 360 did NOT defeat Nintendo Wii in the percentage of gaming time Americans spent on the respective systems in January 2009, as was reported by multiple outlets earlier this week. And Sony's PlayStation 3 didn't do nearly as badly as the original graph suggested.

So maybe people actually do play their Wiis after all.

@Thrillhouse

Haha too funny. Luke Plunkett's anti-Wii Bias strikes yet again.

Nielsen's way of gathering info for stats is totally outdated and I'm sure they got all their info here wrong. They collect samples through many forms, for example, I received a booklet to fill out for TV ratings and told me to write down everything I watched during a week period and paid me $20 dollars for it. Guess what I did? I totally skewed my favorite TV shows in my favor to help their ratings, I sure didn't write down what I was watching every time I was watching it.

What are you looking at, nerd?

Well, it's not that surprising that Wii gets more than twice the playtime of PS3. 360 seems to be tracking actually pretty close to Wii.
