I guess Luke had to take over Kotaku duties while Brian got his perm redone.

Ok most of you are all wrong here.

The first graph column is a percentage compared to total tv usage.
For example If PS3 is played for one hour, (min %8) then the tv is being used another 10-12 hours in that day.
On the other hand If wii is played one hour, the tv is only used another 5-6 hours. (@15%)

the real numbers we are looking at here is the usage minutes, sessions, and days. Multiply them together and you get the minutes used per console.

The wii is the lowest in all three categories, meaning that it is played the least.

That's the second column.

Figure 4 looks at which consoles are being used the most minutes.

Personally i'm still trying to wrap my head around "Gamecube usage is trending upwards.  PS3 usage downwards."

Normally i'd expect a typo but they said the same thing twice.

Days look dark for Sony if they can't attract anyone outside of the male adults 25-34 year old demographic. Those users will be in their late 30's and early 40's when PS4, Xbox 720 and Wii 2 launch.

Consider the following two households:

The Johnstons is a family of 5 (Mother, Father, teenage daughter, with two sons [4 and 11]) who own a Wii which receives an average of 50 hours of playtime a week (Mother - 5 hours, Father - 7 hours, Teenage Daughter - 8 hours, and each son plays for 15 hours)

The Smiths are a family of 5 (Mother, Father, teenage daughter, with two sons [4 and 11]) who own a PS3 which receives an average of 40 hours of playtime a week (Mother - 0 hours, Father - 10 hours, Teenage Daughter - 0 hours, and each son plays for 15 hours)

How would this data be interpreted by the Nielsen survey? Depending on the methodology taken you could have completely opposite interpretations of the Data ... On top of that, there is a great deal of difficulty accurately collecting data about users of a system which is more likely to have multiple users in a household based on a survey, because the person you talk to may be able to accurately report their own usage but is unlikely to report someone else's use accurately.

The fact is that the Wii sells a similar ammount of software per system sold as either other console, so the "Lower" play-time per user of the system has to be roughly balanced out by an increase in the number of users per system.

a 4 year old playing ps3 for 15 hours a week? wow

sorry kasz you are correct. I was using the wrong graph. :(

to summate:
ps3 users play 1053 minutes per month
360: 1190
wii: 516
everything else is irrelevant to the context of the OP and title.

EDIT: you guys are only confused because you are trying to prove something to yourselves that is not true.

I do surveys for this company and they often ask me about console use.

The quetions that are asked are very basic and are always a series of check boxes asking you to choose from a certain range listed (eg: are you- under 16, 17-25, 26-39, 40-50, over 50) and they ask for your sex, age range, location, annual income, consoles owned, consoles played in last x months, types of games prefered, number of games purchased in last 6/12 months and estimated daily hourly use on each console.

Nielsons is actually a fairly accurate source. There is a reason why their data is relied on by every single major TV outlet to book millions of dollars of ad revenue. That being said this doesn't mean anything except for determining usage of various demographics so that they can target those groups .
All of the people here are obviously here because they are mainly hardcore gamers (regardless your choice of console), which means it is likely your usage will be much higher then the average person because it is something you like to do.

I have both a Wii and 360 and I always go to the 360 instead of the Wii unless I have friends over my son is in the mood for some MK or SSBB. But even my 5 year old son prefers my 360 and has been begging me to get him his own.

Big surprise?
