Forums - Sales Discussion - Worldwide Wii sales are now only 4 million behind Xbox360 - closing the gap

I wouldn't suggest that the Wii could catch the 360 here in North America this year, although next year is a possibility.

Who cares? Wii doesn't affect 360. 360 will beat the PS3, that's what counts.. Wii is like a toy..the real system battle is 360 vs PS3.
If the Wii continues selling well into the year, we'll continue seeing more development resources pulled away from PS3/360 and towards the Wii, that's all there is to it. Of course I'm not saying they'll abandon 360/PS3, but the longer this current trend continues, the more of an effect we'll see during these "console wars". Of course, western developers are presumably going to be slower to offer more wii titles, simply because of the presumed market share that we expected a year ago and the good success of the 360 in North America. But now with Wii dominating in Japan, and starting this year by outselling the 360/PS3 in other regions, it's a ripple effect that can have a dramatic effect on this industry. :)

Like it TOOK Holiday sales in 06? The wii will NOT outsell the 360 in america and it will NOT sell enough to overtake it worldwide in euro sales leaving Japan...which Sony will keep enough of the sales to prevent a big N worldwide lead. The article said the PS3 is struggling...selling 440k a month american on average is not what i call "struggling". Add Japan and it's 669k a month worldwide...Bias artilce not knowing the numbers.

Yeah, the 360 took holiday sales with having it's first AAA exclusive and being the only new console where supply was higher than demand, by a significant amount. The lack of a new 360 announcement so far quiets the rumors of Microsoft's production reduction from console hardware change to the increasingly strong option of market supply saturation, thus why the 360 has yet to break 10 million, although it will probably break that number this month. Anyways, we can't really argue long-run numbers until the wii's demand is at least fairly smaller than the supply, but until that happens, the Wii is gaining ground on the 360, like it or not. The PS3 sold, in Jaunary, about 120k in Japan and 275k in North America. (390k total) The Wii sold, in January, about 400k in Japan and 480k in North America. (880k total) The 360 sold, in January, about 30-40k? in Japan and 330k in North America. (370k at most) I don't know Europe's numbers, but I'm more than sure the Wii is outselling the 360 there as well so far this year, and we'll have to wait and see for the PS3's launch. If you recall, England is still trying to fulfill Wii preorders from 3 months ago, according to an IGN article, and they've already sold about 1.5 million in Europe. Interesting fact : The Wii is outselling the PS2 at the same point in it's lifetime. :)

I don't think the 360 will get past 10 million this month, maybe next. Why would MS reduce production? I keep hearing about a hardware update, but have no real info on it. Anyway, I want a PS3. I just hope it succeeds, which I am sure it will.

I expect they both will trail the ps3 by xmas 2008 . The numbers will be very close in my opinion between all three . MOTORSTORM madness has already begun...........just to day at bestbuy i saw around 7 people each picking up a copy of MOTORSTORM . March is a big month for ps3 and it is expected to come very close to Wii in terms of monthly sales. i can safely bet that ps3 would sell 13 million units by the end of the year. If LAIR can meet the expectations then that figure would reach 20 m no doubt. ofcourse in 2008 ps3 takes total control..................with the PLAYSTATION EDGE i believe we would see SHREK quality games in no time. i can challenge anyone about ps3's prospect. HOME claerly dwarved any xbox live storm. MOTORSTORM i believe might have sold 500 k by now. (NA and JAP)
Wow, 7 people? Awesome! By the way last time I was at a big retailer in germany they sold 5 Wii in 30 minutes... oh wait, that is more than 7 motorstorms a day I think? As soon as Nintendo releases Wii health pack and Wii music in Japan it will sell like crazy and those games will both outsell Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. I think the Wii will pass 360 sales in early 2008 BUT I expect the 360 to sell about 30 million units worldwide till 2011.

MrStickBall: 9 months is 39 weeks, not 36. Then, you assume Japan will sell at 60k average, couting the holiday weeks. Which would mean the Wii will do worse than 60k for the rest of the year until holidays, as holidays will sure be higher than 60k (unless the Wii fail by that time). So I'd rather say 39 x 80k in Japan = 3.12 which puts everything in a different perspective, as it puts Wii only 1 m units in November. With your 750k, that's a mere 250k more to do in Europe. I don't actually believe that the Wii can catch up to 360 this year. It would be amazing, but I'm not ready to believe that yet.

MS reduced product production for the first quarter of the year, many presumed because in order to reach that "10 million shipped" marker (which makes the console look good) they had to produce them far faster than they sold them. The big rumor, however, is that they were trying to flush out existing inventory of 360's before announcing a "Zenith" version of the 360 with HDMI and a larger hard drive. That rumor was also based on a "big announcement" at this Game Developers Conference, which I believe has now ended, without any such announcement. This leads us to be quite sure that the reduced production was simply the overstock scenario mentioned earlier. Btw, I would never call the PS3 a lost cause, it mainly depends on what you would define as a "sucess". At this point, it is almost impossible for the PS3 to achieve the same market share success that it's predecessors enjoyed, the competition is far too flexible, affordable, and creative. Even 50% market share is going to require a lot of effort and luck for the PS3 at this point in time. Sony's best bet is in the long run, if they can hold out that long, they would have to want to try to stay with their current console longer than the competition, but the question is if they can take advantage of the competition's next "transition period". The PS3 isn't likely to be a failure, but it will not be the runaway sucess that Sony wants, even if Blu-Ray dominates HD-DVD, it still has to combat the mass market power of traditional DVD's.

Blu-Ray already won. Only Universal and small Weinstain studio exclusively support HD-DVD. The biggest players of 2006 in Hollywood - #1 Sony-Columbia, #2 Disney and #3 Fox support Blu-Ray (also MGM and Lionsgate). Number #4 - Warner Bros. supports both formats. 5:2 (be awere Weinstain means nothing) - almost all blockbusters of 2006 are on Blu-Ray exclusively (Bond, Pirates...)

No, I didn't and you should be aware porn industry is going on-line. Porn is big but not as big as you think (no comparison to Hollywood).
