Forums - PC Discussion - Will Windows 7 finally kill Windows XP?

I'ts pretty obvious that Vista was a failure and many still have Windows XP after being out for 8 years now. I still own XP and I think it's the best, I've tried Vista and I just didn't like it to much. So Microsoft wants to try to end XP with W7, it looks promising and there is a lot of improvements over Vista but it's really not that much different, it's more of a Vista .5.

So the question is do you think that Windows 7 will be the new Windows XP?

i don't think it will replace XP, businesses are trying to cut back on spending now due to the economy, if XP still works good for business then they will not updrade to windows 7 just for the sake of upgrading unless it is crucial to their business.

Just because Win7 doesn't look that much different than Vista doesn't mean it doesn't work differently.

Windows '98 looked almost exactly like Win '95 but it worked incredibly differently. And Win2k was the same way. WinXP was the first version since '95 to change the appearance drastically.

Win7 looks a lot like Vista, but it works VERY differently. It addresses all the problems that Vista had, and it does it rather well. It has a plethora of performance improvements over even XP, and it offers a variety of advantages too, like better security, more options, greater compatibility with more powerful systems, etc.

It won't stop everybody from using XP, but then, XP and Vista haven't stopped people from using Win2k (yes, many still use 2k, particularly since it's even faster than XP). It will, however, overtake XP as the "dominant 'new system' OS".

Nope, my experiences with vista and with windows 7 have been quite similar. Its almost like windows 7 is new service pack for vista. If people see it like this, they won't use it.

It doesn't address all the problems that vista has. Still it won't run older programs. Even those that native work in XP. And do you really buy all that marketing speech? :D

If it works, isn't bloated (2GB recommended for the OS, right...) and actually streamlines and improves on XP then maybe.

But really MS underestimated the effects of the requirements. I work for a company with over 80,000 employees, and we purchase Dells configured to XP rather than Vista simply because it needs less power and is more reliable. I doubt we're alone in that. MS needs to really get 7 running on the same spec as XP IMHO or the same thing may happen again.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

It'll replace XP and Vista for 2 reasons.

1. Microsoft will pull security support

2. It's resource usage is MUCH better (at least in Beta) than Vista and even runs better than XP at some tasks (In my experience).

However, It won't replace XP for everything, heck at my work we still extensively use Windows 2K, Windows 98 thin clients, and even have a Windows 3.1 machine because of a specific program used for circuit board testing and analysis that requires a 16-bit Windows OS.

Nope it won't. W7 needs to things.

Efficiency and XP level security.

The average joe doesn't install OS. The techies do most of it. Most techies aren't inclined to move past XP because of inefficiency and security levels. Let alone other stuff.

OS are already a hog when applications run. Why should we want an OS to use MORE? Why not make the OS use less and leave the space for extra app space. Smaller OS are easier to make stable too.

Vista post SP1 was fine, unfortunately the hardware requirements to run it very well though were not widespread enough at release. Once people have a opinion that a product is flawed you may as well abandon it as soon as possible, pretty much like they did with Millenium Edition.

Windows 7 will kill XP eventually when they stop supporting it forcing businesses to consider upgrading. This is years away though.

Nope.
XP gets security support until Spring 2014.
So it's quite a safe bet that as Vista sucked so bad and Win7 addresses its major faults, it will outsell its predecessor, but it will be Win8 to send XP into retirement.
BTW Win2000 gets security updates until July 2010, its retirement will benefit Win7 with 30-40million users, very good, perfect to help it outsell Vista, but a much smaller help, in proportion, to let it hope to match XP ~1billion user base.

I don't understand all this trouble people are having with Vista... I got Vista 32-bit with my new PC last year and I never have any problems, its much better than XP was plus its got Dx10 and games run much better.

I think people's problems are due to using pirate copies of Vista.  I read most posts on these forums and others and most of the time people are saying 'I have tried it'.  How can you try it without buying it ? unless its a pirate copy.

I used to use a pirate copy of XP at first but I had many problems with crashing and things going wrong.  One day I bought a new hard drive and the shop was selling a OEM version of windows XP for £40.  I bought it and never had the same problems again.
