Forums - General Discussion - When do you think that HD will become a standard? P.S. What is " true HD" ?

if your into gadgets save your money for a sale.

but

if you really can't wait i'd say get a 720p lcd for bedroom or a 1080p 120hz lcd/plasma/dlp for living room

What's the point of getting a set capable of displaying 120hz when there are no 120hz sources and it isn't part of the standard?

analog broadcasts to be disabled by 2009?

http://www.gearlive.com/news/article/q307-analog-tv-cease-2009/

the article explains that if you want analog you have 3 options to continue service beyond feb 2009

1. have your cable co. supply the hardware
2. buy a $50-70 tuner
3. use a digital tuner supplied vcr or dvr

Thanks for the advice on buying and all, even if that's not this thread is about :P.

I'm just pondering where tv will go eventually. In the beginnig we had pictures without realtime sound. Then came tv with that realtime application. the next great step was giving colours to the picture. Further down the line we changed the picture from analog tapes into data processed by computers etc. What next? Because outside of increasing picture resolution, there's not much more to do, is there?

Or maybe i'm just short sighted :).

As to when HD will become a standard, i must say that america isn't the one to call the shots. I'd put my money on the far east. china, india, japan. Most of the technology comes from there, so i would guess that what they say, goes.

Deep into the darkness pearing

Long i stood there

Wondering

Fearing

Doubting.

Something like 50 million hdtv in us by end of 08, more and more hd programs are available.

1080p tvs the standard by 09

Theres no current HD standard, but there is a current best 1080P. Both Bluray and HD-DVD can display in 1080p. If you have to have one, buy one... Otherwise wait.

I'm pretty sure that True HD is an audio format.

I said 120hz for living room

Because I plan on keeping it for 6-10yrs, i'd get just about every feature possible, .....and besides 70" tv's are heavy and difficult to transport.

if thats not enough ...techno geeks read this

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/120hz/

if your lazy ... it explains 120hz is basically for smoother frame rate

I seriously doubt 480p will be standard by 09. 1080p probably in 2011

i think this is what you're looking for...

You Spoony Bard!

True HD is Dolby's lossless audio format.

In regards to a HD standard. UK is still on analogue with digital signal in many areas. The switchover begins next year and ends completely in 2012 so 99% of UK will be full digital (DAB and DVB). During that time HD services will trickle out. There is still uncertainty as to what is going to happen to the freed up signal space. It will be auctioned off probably to mobile phone services, nothing has been set aside for digital HD services.

Digital services are available but limited, you have to pay a premium for what is available, currently only the BBC has offered a free trial HD service.

I don't expect a suitable HD service here until 2010+, be it variety of shows or signal quality.

I still think its worth getting a HD screen though, my next TV will be full HD (1080p) its primary function games and DVD's don't really watch a lot of TV.

480p waning in '09. 2012 HD = mainstream or about to and officially MS by 2013 where the Wii 2'll be released w/ the PS4/Xbox 720.

@Hus

Uh...no. Currently 25% of the peoole in the US have HDTVs, 50% know it has HD, 50% don't. Meaning 20,800,000 out of...uh...let's say around the US' 520 mil people. 10,400,000 don't know it has HD. Every year there is a 7% increase in HDTV purchases in the US. Let's say 51%+ of the people in the US (around 260,000,000+ people) have HDTVs, and let's call that 'mainstream.' By '07's end 32% of the US people will have HDTVs. For 51% it will take...3 years for it to be 'mainstream' meaning end of 2010 ('10) and in 2011 ('11). By that time the new consoles will soon be done and the 49% will continue to buy Wiis and whatever. By 2012-13 HD will be more mainstream. %s might be lower though considering a lot more people move to the US.

Sure they dont know.  Like in my house if they called my mom and asked is my TV HD she sure as hell would not know, but i would.  I doubt people that ignorant or just dense that they buy a something for a grand and they dont know WTF it does ? its really hard to buy a hd tv with out the sales guy giving you the hd ohh so blehh blehh ales pitch.

As much as you all want to avoid hd you cant, its coming fast.  I dont know any self respecting sports fan that does not watch their mlb/nfl nhl whatever games in Hd.
