Forums - Gaming Discussion - Square Enix: Nintendo saying no to cross-platform MMOs

natural platform for mmo is pc...

magic word:
mods

console as x360 and ps3 can load user mod...

but these mods necessarly born from pc...

on pc we have mods...
on console we only play what they plan for us to play...

other magic word:
freedom

on console we can have only:
freedom of choice.
(play or not play what they decide)

on pc we have:
Freedom.

i can't wait the day we can play games at 1200 resolution pn pc!!!!!
(for a resonable price...of course)

1080 is already so old...

Personally, I don't like MMO. I like to sit in my own little world playing games by myself or with friends I know. heheh. If another FF comes out as MMO, it means I'll have to buy it like I did for FFXI and not play it. :(

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

Final Fantasy XI Producer Hiromichi Tanaka presented a keynote about future Square-Enix Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games at the Game Developers Conference in Austin, Texas today. Tanaka stated that the Wii is not a platform being considered for MMOs at this time.

"As for Nintendo Wii, it will be pretty difficult if you were to cross-platform for a couple reasons," Tanaka responded when asked about the possibility of a cross-platform MMO appearing on the console. "One is that Nintendo's currently not allowing different cross-platform titles, and as you know, the resolution differences make it harder for us to make cross-platform games. Currently we're not looking at Nintendo Wii as a platform."

Tanaka did state that an MMO on Wii is technically possible so long as the console receives a hard drive attachment. Nintendo has made no statements about producing such a device for Wii.

The only true MMO to appear on a Nintendo platform thus far is the GameCube title Homeland. The game was created by developer Chunsoft and saw a limited release in Japan back in March 2005. The other server-based online RPGs for GameCube allowed up to four players in the Phantasy Star Online franchise, costing approximately 10 USD per month for a Hunter's License.

The Wiire will have more on the issue of Wii MMOs in the future.

From what I understand cross-platform means that a game on the PS3 could communicate with one on a different console. This would not be a problem if you were to create an MMO exclusively for the Wii. He said the problem is the lack of a hard drive, how can this be possible when the GameCube had an MMO, although it didn't have a hard drive.

Phantasy Star Online allowed only four players at a time. That is not an MMO.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

The article talks about a game called Homeland.

you cant mod mmo, you got it wrong. you must be thinking FPS and RTS games.

if you call new patch are mod then I guess your are right, or if you refer to mod your own client side layout but that dont alternate anything to server and other clients.

Well, I don't mind. I quited the MMO addiction some time ago... ahhh the dark days.

I think Square is seeing the success of World of Warcraft and wants in on the action so it's likely that their future may actually be in MMO games. If that's the case Nintendo could be left out in the cold since their system has no harddrive and online support for it is the weakest of the big three.

On another note I find once a console maker starts refusing games and becomes difficult (usually the company who's console is on top in sales) there's a chance that they can alienate or anger some third parties and that their decisions can come back to haunt them at a later date when they actually need third parties more.

I think Nintendo will survive without PC type games put on it for a while yet. Square is just upset that the market isn't doing what it so childishly wants.

360 - Isn't big in japan
Wii - Is the big money earner but doesn't have the stats or policies they want
PS3 - Is thier console of choice but is doing terribly.

They've got a lot to bitch about.

Sign the Resident_Evil_5_Petition for a Wii release or Dark_Samus is going to come get you.

That's not entirely true. Some MMOs like Diablo 2 and Ultima Online allow you to create private servers (or shards as in UO) where you can make your own stuff.

"the resolution differences make it harder for us to make cross-platform games"

Huh? If the game were single platform, they'd still have to make 480p and regular SDTV resolutions for the users who don't have an HDTV. So why would resolution differences be a factor when porting the game to other systems?
