Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why doesn't someone make a 1080p FPS on the console

Porting Wii games and upgrading the resolution to 1080p should run smoothly 60fps on PS360.

Your TV is fine. It is telling you that KZ2 is in 720p because it's not being upscaled by your PS3. So it's the TV that upscales it to its native resolution (1080 I suppose).

In Gears case, it's being rendered at 720p (I think it supports 720p and 1080i, like KZ2), and then the upscaler chip inside the 360 upscales it to 1080p, and that's correctly recognized by your TV.

In one case you're upscaling using the chip in your TV, in another you're upscaling using the chip in your 360, in both cases the rendering is 720p.

Upscaled 720p is usually good enough, especially in motion. Note that it works for all consoles: as I said, if you feed a 720p signal to a 1080p TV, then the TV circuitry will upscale it. The only downside is if your TV has a really bad upscaler chip, then it might be better to let your console do the upscaling work.

Killzone 2 is 720p for me too, my tv is a bravia 52" which I bought this year.

Yes you are right. But why can't I have an upscaled image for KZ2 then ? (Note that KZ2 is still tucked on 720p on my TV... or am I confused ? It runs the XMB in 1080p then switch to 720p when I start KZ2)

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

I also want to know; how do you make KZ2 run at 1080p. Games such as MGS4 run at 1080p but KZ2 doesn't.

@Sardauk: It's viewed in a window? Do you have a setting that would automatically detect the signal and the TV would always upscale it to fit your screen resolution?

You didn't get what he said then. Your Killzone 2 is upscalled but by your TV not your console. The TV says 720p because this is the resolution of the signal its getting.

I think it works like this from what I read around (if anyone has different info, please correct me):
- You set the default resolution in the Settings>Display settings>Video Output settings. Let's say you set it to 1080p. From there you can also see what modes are supported by your TV, or set them manually I think.
- The XMB is always rendered at the default resolution you set there, so in this case your TV will show a 1080p input signal.
- Each game can decide how to upscale based on what you set as the default resolution, and what modes were detected as supported by your TV.

I remember reading from a Guerrilla developer that they always rendered 720p, unless the TV supported 1080i but not 720p (yes, some old TV models did this), in which case they went 1080i. This choice was because 720p looks better in general.

In the case of MGS4 the developers chose to really upscale to 1080p if set, but if I remember well MGS4 also has a reduced horizontal resolution (I think it's 1024x720/1080).

Short version: on the PS3 it's up to developers if really scaling in the game engine to the default resolution, or letting the TV do its job. The 360 on the other hand will always upscale to what you set.

Lower the graphics and get that extra boost of resolution.  Resolution enhances gameplay in FPS.

Maybe they figure thats a PC thing.

Not at the cost of frame rate, AA and AF it doesn't.
