Forums - Gaming Discussion - Most innovative RPG combat system

Vesperia is close to the Star Ocean one, so its not that much of innovation , i say

Valkyria Chronicles : i didnt remember anyone did that before.

Chrono Trigger : The Team Attack thing (Forgot it's name sorry) is very new at those times.

Shadow Hearts : Cant find that system outside shadow hearts.

Yeah I didn't forget valkyria chronicles. That would get honorable mentions as most innovative strategy RPG combat system.

What puts Vesperia on the top of my list is not what makes Vesperia like the Star Ocean series.  The innovative aspect of star ocean would be the use of making skills more powerfull the more you use them instead of just doling out upgrades as you level up.

tales of phantasia was pretty revolutionary for its time

Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Destiny remake, and Star Ocean 4 have the best battle systems ever IMO.

Still a huge fan of Star Ocean : Till the end of time

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Xenogears, Valkyria Chronicles and the Grandia series. Tales of Vesperia had an awesome combat system but i don't know if i would call it innovative.

Speaking of JRPG ahead of its time:

Legend of Dragoon was awesome.

I've always thought that Chrono Cross had a very innovative battle system. It mostly got rid of the necessity to fight normal battles, and the element system was quite original. It also had nice touches, like the 100% chance of running even from bosses, and the chance to heal with unused elements after the battles.

Final Fantasy VIII was a pretty innovative and also excellent battle system

legend of the dragoon, grandia and legend of legaia. for me those games are truly innovative in RPG combat system.
