Forums - Sales Discussion - Warhawk 107k- Lair 92k/ STRANGE numbers

@ HappySqurriel

After hearing for months how these games would be better than anything the XBox 360 or Wii would have, and how everyone would buy a PS3 just to play these games, one would expect that the PS3 would have sold over 100,000 units the week when both of them launched. Wait, you mean they were overhyped like EVERY PS3 game so far?

I think you may be mixing things up a little. Sony doesn't have exclusivity on "great games", however it's by far the most powerful platform, meaning eventually you will see complex games which simply cannot be done with identical quality on neither Wii nor XBox 360.

Lair seems pretty unique though, if you are interested in such a game PS3 lair is currently the only option. Even the most resembling games like Eragon (PS2) and Warhawk (PS3) are very different if compared to the gaming experience Lair provides. I wouldn't be surprised quite a few people will love the experience, likewise playing Madded, Tiger Woods, Gears of War, Brain Training, Super Ruba-Dub, etc isn't everyone's piece of cake while others would love it. My girlfriend for example dislikes all FPS games, but Lair looks far more interesting to her (But Warhawk isn't her type of game).

Wow warhawk had so many possitive and great reviews and it sold 107k, while LAIR horrible reviews and it sold almost as good as Warhawk!?! 92k

Unleass WarHawk number only include Blue Ray version but that is hard to belive.

I'd be willing to bet that only a small fraction (considerably less than 1/2) of all gamers read reviews before buying each game.   Besides, there isn't much out available for the PS3 yet -- Lair, being mediocre and having a slew of problems, may be one of the more interesting titles available.

I didn't think they would start fabulously...

Lair, had lots of pre-orders before the reviews started to come out so people just kept them (A lot were probably on holidays during the reviews or didn't both to read them or ignored them as the marketing took over). Lair will probably have a big drop next week.

Warhawk numbers were hindered because many people downloaded it... I think Warhawk will be fine going forward. It will have much better then expected legs because of its reviews and word of mouth.

I think you missed my point ...

Since Lair, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword were announced I have heard dozens of Sony Fanboys hype these games as "AAA" quality games that would be better and sell better than any game on the XBox 360 or Wii; any suggestion that these games could end up only being good or that their sales may not be exceptional was met with constant bashing from the Sony fans.

These games have now been released and are (at best) above average and their less than steller reputations will lead to them having limited sales; to what extent do you believe that Sony fans will own up to hyping these games? Do you expect people to admit that sales were disapointing or are they going to claim (as they did with Gundam Musou) that no one expected these games to sell well?

Come on these games started the PS3's dominance, didn't they?

AFAIK, and I have read a lot of comments by PS3 supporters. Many of those who think the PS3 will become the dominant platform most often hint to game like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid (and more recently Killzone 2) and the anticpation on price drops (i.e. a PS3 lite version to be released within a couple of years)

I think you may be generalizing the comments made by a tiny percentage of PS3 owners or do you base your perspectives on large scale polls or something?

If true, I don't agree with them. They do help build a bigger install base though. Personally I expected games like God of War 2 to outsell any PS3 game (nomatter if the similar Heavenly Sword would be so much better or not), this because of a much larger install base and a lower entry price for the platform.

Once the online/multiplayer mode of Warhawk gets boring...and trust me it will although I have no idea how long it'll take, it'll fade off of the earth. Warhawk is basically HALF of a game as it should have been sold for half of the full retail price. I'm glad there are finally good games coming out for the platform but the price is ridiculous.

Are you familiar with games like Battlefield, Counterstrike & Tribes? All these games are primarily multiplayer, but each one was very popular for a considerable period of time. Battlefield & Counterstrike are still popular in their own right. Tribes was extremely popular despite having a dismal single player component. Battlefield & Tribes both sold for the same retail price as every other PC game at the time. By your argument that it is half a game, I suppose online only RPG's such as Ultima Online & World of Warcraft which also sold for retail are also "half of a game".

The price is not rediculous. As Dylan himself pointed out, many people in the beta clocked in 20-40 hours of gameplay in a limited period of time. Now if your average single player game is 15-30 hours of gameplay, despite it being a multiplayer only title it is a very solid value, PSN or bluray version. However, if you've never really enjoyed a fiercely competitive online game before, this probally won't do much to sway you into it.

These games have now been released and are (at best) above average and their less than steller reputations will lead to them having limited sales;

I do not call a game that gets ranked 8 - 8.9 "above average". Any game that averages reviews in that category is a very good experience. As long as you pay attention to the apprehensions of the reviewers and see if any of those points bother you, a game ranked 8-8.9 is very good.

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

Warhawk was released on PSn at midnight, alot of people went with the download and those that already had a headset sure as hell were not gonna buy the retail version.

Its also PSn only in Japan.

Keep in mind that most retail stores like Target and Best Buy didn't even have Lair on the shelves until this Tuesday or Wednesday. Lair could easily equal or even surpass it's week one sales in the second week.

I had two different people attack me for calling Lair & Heavenly Sword semi worthwhile titles that weren't the system sellers people wanted them to be back in April after someone said PS3 sales would turn completely around by June. Of course they accused me of being a fanboy and thinking Warioware was a big game to which I responded that I didn't even think the Wii had a single Triple A title out (I consider TP a gamecube port). I've noticed plenty of people that were hailing Lair & Heavenly Sword a few months ago quietly shift focus on Killzone 2 and what not because of reactions from reviewers. Not all PS3 fans think this way obviously but there are quite a number of ones that do. It's what we call a vocal minority. The levelheaded majority don't speak out as much so it paints a picture of more Sony fans being like the vocal fanboys.
