Forums - Sony Discussion - 4-6 years before good games on PS3? so why buy now?

There will be great games out next year, R&C and so on have great potential. Basically Kaz is trying to tell people that what you are seeing now is far from the PS3 at its limits, If you take a look at PS2 games right now and the amount they have improved since launch titles, he is pretty much correct. I reciently found out that you can run Gran turismo 4 in 1080i at full 60fps, something like that would never have been possible without some serious years of development.

Anyone doubting their "10 year vision" should also check the production cycle of the PS1 (11 years) and the PS2 (7 years and still going strong), just because a new machine comes out, doesnt automatically end its predessesor. I agree 10 years for the PS3 is pushing things a little, but i wouldnt be surprised at 8.

If in 3 - 4 years M$ try to introduce yet another console and cut off their existing fanbase once again, i think it will be the worst mistake they ever make. Even after almost 2 years on the market theres still alot of 'floating voters', still unsure if its the right machine for them.

They need to establish a machine fully before moving to the next, something the xbox failed to do and something the 360 has a long way to go before achieving anything close. This is not the world of PC graphics cards bill!

buy it when the games you want come out, simple...

BTW, nice trolling guys, you know who you are.

I hope you don't mean me. I was just being ironic to Hirai. I hate that guy; he brought Sony to second/third place.

nah, i know the difference between sarcasm and flat out flaming. you guys sure are good at kicking Sony while they're down... what were you saying when the PS2 was beating the shit out of the GC, or the same happened to the N64... this is in the Sony forum... if you have nothing constructive to say, take your wiimote, shove it up your ass, go back to the Nintendo forum and waggle to your hearts desire. you're not supposed to bash a console in it's own forum...

Yea the PS3 is going to take some time while the developers get use to the hardware. Its going to start dominating in late 2008 or early 2009. I'm not going to purchase it cause I know its not worth getting now. FFXIII is ways away and MGS4 GOP is still in development, so I'm going to wait. I'm thinking the Wii right now though............I'm thinking.........O_O

PS1 and PS2 where the number one consoles of their time. If a console is not number one then yes, a new machine will end the old one really fast. BTW Bill Gates has nothing to do with graphic cards, the XBox was cut of because of Nvidia not MS and the GC is just about as dead (but you can play the games on the Wii if you aren´t happy with the lineup yet, smart move Nintendo:)

That statement above is true the original Xbox only died because Nvidia and Microsoft was in a contract dispute, thats why the Xbox 360 was released. If not then the Xbox would of picked up some thousands more users through the Xbox. But its the Xbox 360 now...lol...and since the PS1 was dominating it lasted a long time and with the PS2 its going to do what the PS1 did.

PS3 is just like wine.. let it age and it will get a lot better. More Blu-ray, more games, MGS4, more updates, PRICE drop. Not to long a go people were saying the same thing about the 360.

To develop your analogy further... In order to age wine well without letting it rot, you need some skills. So far, it seems Sony is doing everything it can to let it rot.

Hmmz I think you have to look at the market. Since the consoles came out silicon has just droped waaay down. If they want to bring out the XBox 1080 they can expect that it will carry 1 or 2GB ram, a much faster GPU and imagine even 8 CPU cores. Can you imagine that instead of 7 'side aids' you have 8 full cores to use. And since the cache is now going into the 12MB region we can expect up to 24 MB ram. Thats rather usefull for a graphics enviroment (certainly in a dedicated enviroment).

I don't know but we all learned that you better bring out a cheap console from now on. And if Microsoft will be able to outclass the PS3 with a 250$ console: they will.

However it can be 300$ also, you knever now how the market evolves and the recent price drop were mostly due to lower margins.

i never knew that about the xbox, but im sure if MS really wanted to continue production, they would have settled thier problem with nvidea.

I agree that the PS1 and 2 were number 1, but that doesnt automatically mean they would/should end a consoles life if it isnt. If the PS3 is still doing nothing in 2 years time do you thing Sony will throw a PS4 on the market?
The N64 had a lot of support for many years even tho it was nothing compared to the PS1 in sales. It comes down to company methods and their standing in the current market. The market has changed alot over the years which makes comparisons to consoles 10 years ago very unreliable.

The N64 (and in the same way, the DC) will always be remembered for its great library of unique and pioneering games, the xbox will probably only be remembered for Halo and Kotor. It was still a key part of N's history.

As it was the xbox was not the springboard it was intended to be and the 360 is suffering because of it. The 360 has one of the highest ratios of good games for console its age, yet its still not managing to get to any sort of speed sales wise and i believe the poor start given to it by the first machine is the reason, or atleast one of the reasons.

Another reason the PS3 HAS to have a long shelf life is the hardware and graphics that developers are able (or willing) to produce will eventually hit a cieling (financially and artistically), many developers didnt have the ability or resources to exploit the PS2 to its fullest, the same will apply to the PS3 on a larger scale.
What exactly could thay add to their next console that would make a really noticable difference graphics wise? Just becasue you gove a developer the ability to push X billion polygons per second, doesnt mean they can utilise them.

Games are taking far more time and money to develop nowadays and more and more devs cannot compete in a market like this, developers cant take risks anymore and have to stick with trusted franchises and game styles. exactly why the Wii is how it is and exactly why developers are climbing over eachother to make games for it.

God of war , Shadow of the Colossus , Resident Evil 4 ... same was with the PS2 , the best games came afther some good years :?

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

besides no offence, but the PS3 came out to be just the supercomputer in your household that you definitly needed.

All we've seen so far is that some game look a bit better on the PS3, but it's not like it's uber impressive. And however Killzone2 looks great, you can definitly see that the technical features like explosions, dustclouds and responsive enviroments are still a long way from the 2005 E3 trailer. (not that it doens't look good, but it's not like predicted and in those graphical effects where the PS3 should rise and shine well it doens't yet. So the only thing Kaz is saying that we should now wait another 4 year for what we have been promised to get last year.)

And we all know what happens if Sony makes a promise.
For now the PS3 is a great proteïne folder, and that's not a miracle...thats why CPU's like 'The Cell' is made for.
