Red, with Squirtle. I always choose the water pokemon in my journeys. However, thanks to my hate of Empleon in Diamond, I chose Turtwig in Platinum, since he's genetically related to Squirtle, so it's all good ;)

BLUE for the win!!, I actually owned red as well (once my sister didn't want it anymore) and stole yellow from a cousin, bought silver and crystal, stole gold from a buddy, bought saphire and emerald, then leaf green and now pearl and platinum.
Have to say Blue was amazing and Yellow was an awesome remake but I think silver is still my favorite. I WANT A JOHTO REGION REMAKE!! (acually I want a game with all 4 regions and 500+ catchable pokemon, they could call it Pokemon Ultimate)
Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.
One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

By the way, it's not sad to start with a later version. It's sad to keep buying all the versions every 2 years like me. AT LEAST I'M AWARE ITS WRONG!

Red was my first pokemon game and I chose Bulbasaur to start it off...Like others I ended up getting many of the other versions although I did give away two of the versions that to neighbors...
