Has anyone seen this movie? I am thinking of buying it, but I have heard its really scary so I am not sure. Is it worth watching despite being gruesome?

Scary? No. Gruesome? Moderately. Its a very unique film. One of the better "drug" films out there, although it is much more than just a drug film.
Buy it? What's that? You have the internet. Get it for free! Or rent it and make yourself a copy. Though if you did buy it you would at least be supporting a talented director, Darren Aronofsky, although the percentage they see on DVD sales is pretty pathetic compared to the theatrical release.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
No. It's neither scary nor gruesome, in the typical gore connotation. It is however very thorough and the screen never fades to black when you think it should. It doesn't leave things up to interpretation. It's one of my favorite films out there. It's also ironic because I've been in the mood of watching it again all day.

03/10/09 HUGE day in my life:
Buy it...love it...then go get the Fountain.
But you either misunderstood someone when they told you it was scary...or they told you wrong. It is a difficult movie to watch about drug addiction and sadness....but it isn't scary. Unless you find yourself headed down an addictive path.
