Forums - Sony Discussion - The Last stand of the PS2 ... 99 dollars

the PS2 has a good bit of life in it. Also the Ps2 is definitely going to be the bargain console now.

I expect improved sales, I wonder though, how much profit do the make now on the PS2 to warrant this price cut.

ps2 could start selling a lot in poorer countries.

Actually it sells a lot due the piracy.

no one in poorer countries will ever buy full priced games.

nor will they ever have any money or make any impact as a country globally right?

things change, money shifts around and economies grow and shrink - the PS2 might not make it very far in poorer countries like backwater asia, south america, africa, etc. but that dosn't mean that eventually we won't see those become major or at least influential video game markets.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I'd assume it costs them under $50 to make.   I know the EE+GS alone only cost ~$17 back when Sony removed BC from the ps3, and I'm sure costs have gone down further since then.

Let's say the ps2 costs $50, and they start selling it to retailers for $95, whiel they used to sell it to retailers for $125.  They'd have to have a near 100% increase in weekly sales to make back the loss in profit per unit (going from ~60k a week to ~100k).  That's assuming that they cost that much to make, however.

I may buy one. I sold mine when I got my launch ps3, but now I fear that my ps3 could crap out on me and I won't be able to get another BC one from Sony.

My BC ps3 crapped out. Sony sent me the same 60gb model brand new to boot. I think it's also required by US law or something so you don't need a ps2.

Mine crapped out on me (the disc drive's motor broke so no discs would spin, lol) and I got a refurbed 60gb back (looked brand new except for some scuff marks on the side).  I'm honestly not all that worried about it.  For every person that sends there's in and gets another one back, they can then refurbish that person's system and ship it to somebody else.

At worst, I'd just have to wait a bit longer than usual while they refurbish my own system.

I think I might buy one, if I buy brand new and keep everything in the box, that $100 could turn into $1000 15 - 20 years down the road if it's sold on Ebay. The PS2 does have the biggest and best video game library of all.

In my case, I got the infamous YLOD. The ps3 sony sent back looked new. Maybe it was refurbished after all lol. I couldn't find any marks at all.

I actually still have my slim ps2 anyway lol.

I'm still waiting on sony to send me a refurb 60gb. Seems like it has taken forever.

I don't think that will ever happen b/c there are way too many ps2 out there.
