GDC: We're "broader" than mature-rated content, says Nintendo

Why do M-rated games lack success on Nintendo platforms? Because Nintendo's "broader than that," apparently. Sega and Rockstar must be thrilled."I'm not going to make an argument for why certain M-rated games, as you say, don't achieve a certain amount of momentum on the Nintendo platform," NoA corporate affairs VP Denise Kaigler told IGN at GDC yesterday."We're broader than that. And that's what our contribution to this industry is. We are making sure that we make games for a broad consumer platform from age five to 95, and that really has worked well for us."GTA: Chinatown Wars charted at six in the UK rankings on release, while Sega's MadWorld only managed to place at 34. Why? Ask Sega."We're not saying that certain games can't succeed on Wii," Kaigler added."We want those games. We want people to bring those opportunities to us.

So I opened up my answer to your question by saying talk to Sega, talk to those guys."Sure it's not because Nintendo hardware's explosive growth this generation has been a result of selling in to non-gamers? We think it might be.  That interview's well worth a read!

First off, they are broader than that.

Secondly, Madworld will top one million and China Town Wars will be in the top 15 sellers this Christmas season..

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Have any new mature games been successful on the PS3 and Xbox360 or are they reliant on sequals and well established titles, COD4, GTA4, RE5, Halo3, Killzone2, Street fighter4 etc etc?

I'm wondering if the Wii is getting a much higher percentage of new titles than the other 2 consoles this generation.

That is the interview where Matt basically moved the goal post. Cause the full interview started with him questioning the million sellers that Nintendo claimed, asking why aren't any M-Rated titles on the list.

...Basically now the argument will be, "Sure it sales games, but does it sale any M-Rated games? eh? EH?! GOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLL!!!!" *does goalpost with hands*

@stof: I've ALWAYS felt that Madworld would be a slow seller, but a game that would make core gamers look at the Wii differently as a console that you can make good core games on. I'm with you both will get to 1 milli by years end.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

But see thats the thing, you have Matt, for example, bringing up no M-Rated titles reaching a milli on Wii, but the current crop of M-Rated games that have mainstream appeal haven't released on the Wii, OR DS in the last year or so.

...I really think people are giving ChinaTown Wars a bum's rush cause they are expecting it to do GTAVI numbers first week for some damn reason...

There are three M rated Wii million sellers according to vgchartz: RE: Umbrella Chronicles, RE4, and COD:WaW. Then you have House of the Dead 2 and 3 just under that.

Matt's whole argument seems to be, "See, look at these ports (Godfather, Scarface, Manhunt 2), they didn't sell! So most m rated games on the Wii have bombed!".  You'd think he'd have learned his lesson with bringing up first month NPD to show how Wii games underperformed after Boom Blox and De Blob made them look silly. House of the Dead: Overkill will be more of the same: small opening, big legs.

I'm very curious if Matt could even list the "dozens and dozens" of bombs on the Wii he's referencing.

Matt was being such an ass with that interview. "look at all these wii games that bombed! Why did the bomb Nintendo??"

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

I agree with you there.  I'd thinnk that they would want to make a little more of a statement than that regarding what is going on with the more mature games.  Talk to Sega about Madworld!

Actually, there are 5.  You forgot Red Steel and CoD 3 is now a million seller as well.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Red Steel and Call of Duty 3 are rated T.
