Ok, you find superficial things like that make a game more complex or dumbed down, instead of the core gameplay mechanics and engine functionality.  Just a difference in view points I guess.

That IS part of the gameplay in an RPG. Especially an open one like FO.

If you were to not like Fallout 3 as much because the tone is different, that I could agree with.  But this, no, I just don't get it.  I do not see the dumbing down that you refer to.  A simple action like prostitution doesn't change much.  To me anyway.

But back to the point at hand.  If the game had not been made for consoles, do you believe that Bethesda would have included prostitution and child murder?  And to me, that answer is a resolute no.

Why would people take away mechanics that made a predecessor such a classic?

Different developers.  Different time.  Bethesda definitely wasn't setting out to make a controversial game.  You should probably question why they would use that IP to begin with.

Indeed. Should have just started out with a new IP instead of simplifying an existing one. Then I can put Fallout under best franchises without having to add "(FO3 not as much)," like I do with UT these days. Again, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game. It's just not as good. Next time I want to play through an open RPG I'll go back to FO2, not FO3.

Goes to show you that if your game isn't shit on the PC and it is geared mainly for the PC it will sell well.

Well, Valve/Blizzard making games for PC is a bit like Nintendo making games for Wii/DS, so I wouldn't say it proves a lot.

Valve games almost ALWAYS sell a lot.

Not really no. They sell well because they aren't dumbed down console games. They are made for PCs and only for PCs with maybe a pot to consoles by a handful of peeps, not vice versa. They are aslso very good games.

I don't really see how you disagree with me here...

Hmm... Is that 2.5M across PC + X360? I believe it is.

If so, it's only sold 500K on PC (retail).

Unless this is Americas only (which I doubt), that's rather dissapointing. Team Fortress 2 sold 3 million retail (if I recall correctly).

Of course, it won't stop at 500K, but it probably won't beat 1M.

It doesn't include steam, as Valve is VERY secretive about that information, but we know it's posted monster numbers on the service...like that 3000% increase in sales when they did that sale a while back.  Even if the game was only selling 20-30K before that...3000% would be massive!

Yeah, I know it's retail only.

However, here's the retail data of some other titles.

Half-Life: 9.3 million units
Half-Life 2: 6.5 million units
Counter-Strike: 4.2 million units
The Orange Box: 3 million units
Counter-Strike Condition Zero: 2.9 million units
Counter-Strike Source: 2.1 million units
Counter-Strike Xbox Port: 1.5 million units
Half-Life 2 Episode 1: 1.4 million units
Half-Life Opposing Force: 1.1 million units
Half-Life Blue Shift: 800,000 units

That's as of sometime in December.

Your mistake is considering PC game sales with the trends of console game sales. PC games are long seller, when console games (with the exception of some Nintendo titles) are fast seller.

HL2 went out in 2004. At the end of 2004, it sold 1,7 millions, at the end of 2005 it sold 4 millions, at september 2008 6,5 millions.

And also, you don't consider that Steam sales % on total PC sales is growing up quickly.

It has still sold 500-750K in 18 weeks, including a holiday season.

My point isn't that X360 gaming is larger than PC gaming. My point is, PC gaming might be shifting more towards digital distribution than I (and probably most others) thought. The retail market for this title is smaller than I expected. But I guess I shouldn't continue this discussion, as I almost always get "jumped on" and upset a fair bit of people when I enter these discussions.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

I was not upset at all.
I've simply answered to your post with my considerations about that.

Fallout 3 was dumbed down because it was made by Bethesda. It has absolutely zero to do with the fact that it was made for consoles.

I was one of those to pre-ordered Left 4 Dead for my PC via Steam. What a huge fail! It was fun the first 2 days. Then it just got old. It would be interesting to see some kind of numbers on the percentage of gamers still happy with their purchase of this game.

WAY overrated!

Amazing game deserving of amazing sales. Looking forward to the new content coming this month, as well as any new Chapters they bring to the table.

I certainly didn't play it as much as I thought I would, and the matchmaking seriously put me down. I just can't be bothered to play versus with high ping, and there are less dedicated servers here in Brazil than DoD:Source. it doesn't help that coop is the fad of the fads, even with the AI director. overall I think it's taking TOO LONG for them to release the goddamn SDK, it was something that should be out with the game.

"To support the SDK, we are extending the matchmaking system to allow for third party campaigns. We will be adding extra features so players will be able to find dedicated servers running the campaigns they have installed. They will also be able to see friends playing third party campaigns, and be directed to download them as necessary. Another major feature we are planning to add to the matchmaking system at a future date is team-based Versus matching. This will allow two teams of four to locate each other and compete in a Versus match.

We are also revamping our player matching based on skill level. Currently the system tries to match people with the same skill level and best pings together. We will be revisiting this system to tweak it based on data we have collected."

I wonder what prevented them from including it... 6 months ago?

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

I think L4D might be the true sleeper hit of this gen.
