Forums - Sony Discussion - Factor 5: Lair sucks but, hey, it's not our fault

His comparison to wii sports is crazy on so many levels.

Firstly he developed Lair. He has probably been playing the game every other day for the past 2 years. If he can only achieve 8/10 that is worrying. What does he expect people who have only been playing it a day or two to do?

I would bet the developers of wii sports can pull off backspin 10/10 or at least 9/10 times. Or at least could have after just having finished development.

Secondly backspin in wii sports is a skill, like in real tennis. Most people aren't going to get it right every time. Doing a 180 in Lair should not be a skill, it should be a basic command.

In wii sports tennis if you mess up a backspin shot then you will still hit the ball, maybe not how you wanted but you will at least hit it. Maybe you will lose a point because of it but hey it only takes 2 minutes to get back to where you are. If you mess up a 180 in Lair you could die and have to restart the mission. A pretty big difference.

Then of course the price difference between free and $60.

you're comparing wii sports to real tennis??? skill, what a joke, i mastered wii sports while i was drunk... haha Sony's an ass for requiring sixaxis here, or anywhere else for that matter, i never wanted any motion controls to begin with...

I loved SPM's use of the remote, which was nice considering it was a step back from the other games in most respects.

And no, he didn't compare Wii Tennis to real tennis.

If that isn't flame bait I don't know what is.

I'll just leave that one alone and let you have your opinion.

@twestern, i've retracted, but i stick by what i said about never wanting motion controls... i've been gaming since many around here were just a wet stain on the sheets. i first played pong when i was 3 and you were -1. i absolutely adored super paper mario, just some good ole 2D gaming, but felt the remote features unnecessary. feel free to enjoy your Wii, i don't have a problem with that but Sony is REALLY pissing me off.... maybe i'll trade it for a 360... well, after i play MGS4, hehe..

hus, i have to ask were you abused by a guy dressed as mario when you were younger?

owner of SNES, N64, PS, PS2, xbox, 360, and future owner of a wii..... and maybe a ps3 if koei releases particular games only on it

As for lair its unfortunate choice to force motion control onto people, i use the old school pad as much as i can for wii and hope its an option for mario galaxy, I also hope no 360 game ever forces me to play with it. I like my controller i like my analog sticks, better than even a mouse.

Ok, so I just watched the Gametrailers review for Lair and there's no doubt in my mind that that even a 6 is high for this game.

It seems like the controls are bad enough, but the cut scenes aren't exactly spectacular for the games budget, even from the video I could see the animations weren't great, the video had framerate hits-- even on the scripted sequences, it sounds like it's pretty buggy (they actually said it felt unfinished), and how they end is the level is just absolutely unacceptable.

I mean really, it's 2007 and you're working on the PS3 and all they can do to end the level is just freeze the screen and slowly fade to black.

I have no doubt that some who like this game and others have convinced themselves it's good to justify their game and make others think it's good but I'm sorry, this game is just terrible.  I have to feel horrible for the developers who have to see the reactions after all the long work they put into the game but I have the funny feeling it's not a surprise.

While people have said I went overboard with my review (and I may have a bit), everything I said stands true to some level. The game is either bugged or just flat-out BAD from front to back. No control fix is going to cure this game of its ills.

It's a bad game. End of story.

Well, atleast the SDF liked it

"Lair is one of those odd games that comes out of nowhere and completely surprises you. It’s one of those rare gems that people will not appreciate at first, but grow to love over time. Make no mistake, Lair could very well be this generation’s “Mario 64?. With greater use of motion control than any Wii game and better graphics than any 360 game I think it’s safe to say we have a candidate for game of the year right here.

SDF Score: 10/10"

You have that poster too huh?

hey btw twesterm, I'm interviewing for a market research sales job at Parks associates here in the big D. They need somebody to move their gaming research so I applied...and hopefully I'll get going with that

Cool, good luck with that! Where in Dallas?

I think that they are on Harvest Hill.  Here's a website http://www.parksassociates.com/

True and that is worth its own uber-geek merits in its own way, but (and this is more adressed towards the issue than you personally vizunary) just because you've been invested in gaming longer than a said individual doesn't make your opinion or understanding of gaming anymore valid, accurate or cultured, it just means you have an chronological head start. The video game market has been a medium of constant change and overhaul, its not a sytstem by which experience points in wisdom are earned  relative to the length of your exposure. Everyone knows what they like and what they don't like regardless their reasons, and no one should ever use the length in which they've been invested in gaming as justification for anything of any real conviction or merit.

Besides, it's a no win to use this logic. If you claim PS3 owners are largely vet gamers who know what real gaming is then a person can just assume from the perspective of the Ps3's mediocre failure that you're just a bunch of lapsed gamers who've failed to adapt and have been hindered by the years or relying on periodic trends in gaming instead of gaming itself to define how one should enjoy it. If you claim Ps3 owners are younger fresh gamers with a new perspective on gaming, then you give free liscence to anyone to paint a picture of a bunch of teenage kids who want immediate gratification from a graphix box that makes pretty pictures, big explosions and the occasional big boobies.
