I was wondering if you people would think that the FF series is the best RPG series of all time or whether there is something better. Thoughts?
People will have different opinions on which is the best RPG series, but the series that has sold the most, which in my opinion means it's the most popular, is Pokemon.

Thanks gelmar. Would there be a close 2nd or 3rd game/series that would come to mind? I know that this is a broad question but I'm just seeing what people like.

The 'Tales of' franchise is a solid contender and 'Dragon Quest' is arguably bigger in Japan. It seems as if most RPG makers don't know what to do with the genre anymore though.

I agree with that. Fallout owns all, and whenever I've played it, it makes me want to have a MadMax movieathon

If Square wants to ride the Final Fantasy main series down the drain that's fine, but for the love of god stop raping FF7, I loved that game, why are you doing this to your game?! Was the slow period between FFX and FFXII really so unbearable for you that you had to default on spin-offs of the last game you could truly call an over-arching success?!

Advent Children - So-So Movie, pretty and some parts were really good, mostly it was slow though and others were a little too highschool fangirl drama-rific for my taste.

Dirge of Cerberus - I pray every night that someone was killed as punishment for this game or at least the ending.

The Cell Phone Games - Great, because we needed some of the most important parts of the story that never really needed to be told in the first place put into an impracticle game format that is by and large inaccessable to the western fanbase. Good going.

Crisis Core - Jury is still out but looking at how they've handled everything else that has been updated in FF7 it will most likely be a dissapointment.

The only things in these newer additions to FF7 that have remained intact are those Square is either too intimidated to change (sephiroth) or those they care too little about (Red-13, Cait Sith, etc) meanwhile everything else inbetween (Cloud, Tifa, etc) get a nice emo-rific overhaul. Hell there's not even an option for the original japanese dialouge so we're stuck with the five dollar english voice actors Square's regionalization seem so fond of using for the western releases. At least FF12 had good voice acting I suppose.

Face it, the only thing that has changed for the better in these newer editions to FF7 is the turks Reno and Rude.

FF7:AC - have you even seen the complete japanese version? if so you would know the american version was cut down about a half hour which took away a good amount of story.

Dirge - average shooter, kinda interesting story.

Cell phone game (before crisis): agree with you there.

Crisis Core: looks and seems to be an amazing game

Final Fantasy: Dissidia (contains FF7 characters): looks awesome too.

Best RPG series of all time? Well I can rank them for me:

Pokemon
Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, and IX
Dragon Quest
Kingdom Hearts
A whole bunch of other games like Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Tales, Baten Kaitos, etc.
Final Fantasy VII and up (excluding IX)

Honestly, I think modern FF games are a joke. They are nothing compared to many more original and creative RPGs. The old style of the franchise (before VII) was great, but I'm pretty apathetic towards current games. That's not to say I haven't played them... I have played every FF game except XI, including spinoffs, but I don't think they deserve their spot at the top of RPGs anymore.

Oh and ROFL that video was awesome Von Shigsy.

Well Fallout was a great game , I admit , but it was ... well not my style . If I would have to choose the best RPG , it would be Gothic , the first and second one . I know , probably 90% of you will hate it , but its mostly an european giant . Both games have sold more than 2 million copys in Germany alone .

Now , if I would have to rate it by popularity and fanbase I would say :

1. FF
2. Pokemon ( they are many out there , but in the same time many ... well more softcore gamers . Its not the hardest RPG game , and any gamer above 10 years can pic it up and give it a try )
3. DQ huge in Japan , bigger than FF , but its almost nothing in the US and EU
4. Fallout : well what can I say ... the PC gamers real trophy . Forget HL or Warcraft , if your a real gamer you will buy this .
5. Kingdom Hearts , its big , but its soled mainly because the Disney characters ... though its often hard as hell .
6. Well this position is a bit hard to get right . I say Monster Hunter , again as a Japanese killer . The fact that both MHF games sold over 1 million in Japan is ... well more than amazing , and Im shure that afther the PS3 release it will compete with number 1,2,3 .

This is MY opinion , Im not trying to force them on anyone , so dont attack me . If you have a different opinion , than feel free and tell me .

Well, while I agree anyone can play Pokemon, I disagree with you that it's all softcore gamers. The actual adventure is playable by even those with the smallest grasp of the gameplay formula to be sure. It's very easy. However...

The online metagame for Pokemon is an endless depth of strategy, and the best gamers are akin to worldwide chess champions in strategic ability. The game's formula isn't nearly as simple as most people think. I could right a 5 page paper on the intricacies of Pokemon and it's strategies. Most people think there is nothing more to it than this type beats that type, but what make Pokemon so successful is it's appeal to everyone, casual and core alike.

As far as popularity, Pokemon is the second best selling game franchise of all time, outselling Final Fantasy by a vast amount. It's undeniably the more popular franchise, both in Japan and worldwide.

Sorry , what I meant by my Pokemon comment is that the big lead it has in number sales , in front of other franchises is mostly because it apeals to more softcore gamers , and they are the majority of buyers . I know that Pokemon is a complex game , and it can get hard as hell especially when faced with a tuff competitor ( I never wanted to offend anyone with my comment BTW ) , but it can also be played NSMB , meaning : 20 minutes in the lunch break .

Can Pokemon Dungeon beat FFVII:CC in Sales ??
FF might win in the first week, but Pokemon Dungeon with stronger legs should beat it at the end of 4 weeks.

Are you serious?
